Why hire a car in Salamanca

Salamanca's old town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site built almost entirely from golden Villamayor sandstone — is compact and made for walking. The Plaza Mayor, the University of Salamanca (one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 1218) and the two cathedrals all sit within a 15-minute walk of each other. For the city itself, a car adds nothing and only complicates parking in the historic centre.

A car changes things once you look outward. Ávila's intact medieval walls are about 90 km east, comfortably visited as a half-day trip. Zamora, with its Romanesque churches overlooking the Duero river, is about an hour north-west. The Arribes del Duero natural park, a dramatic river canyon straddling the Portuguese border, is roughly 90 minutes west and essentially unreachable without your own transport. For visitors combining Salamanca with a wider Castile itinerary, a hire car turns a single university-town stop into a loop through some of Spain's least-visited historic corners.

What to know before you drive to Salamanca

  • Fly into Madrid or Valladolid, then drive. Salamanca Airport has no regular commercial service, so most visitors collect a hire car at Madrid–Barajas (MAD), about 200 km south-east (roughly 2 hours via the A-50/AP-51), or the smaller Valladolid Airport (VLL), about 120 km north-east (around 1.5 hours). Compare Salamanca car hire prices →
  • Toll and free motorways both work. The AP-51 toll motorway from Ávila is the fastest link from Madrid; the free A-50/A-66 route via Ávila takes a little longer but avoids tolls entirely and is perfectly manageable.
  • Parking in the old town is limited. Much of the historic centre around the Plaza Mayor is pedestrianised or has restricted access. Use one of the paid car parks on the edge of the centre and walk in — it's a short stroll to any of the main sights.
  • Spain drives on the right. Speed limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 90–100 km/h on conventional roads, 50 km/h in built-up areas. Rural roads towards Zamora and the Arribes can be narrow and winding, so allow extra time.
  • Continuing the trip? Ávila is under 90 minutes east, and Madrid makes a natural loop back if you started or plan to end your trip there.

Where to collect your hire car for Salamanca

Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD), about 200 km south-east, and Valladolid Airport (VLL), about 120 km north-east, are the two practical pickup points, since Salamanca has no regular commercial flights of its own.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Salamanca?
Not for the old town itself — it's compact, walkable and largely closed to traffic. A car pays off once you want to see Ávila, Zamora or the Arribes del Duero, none of which are easy to reach by public transport.
Where do I pick up a rental car for Salamanca?
Salamanca's own airport has no regular commercial flights, so most visitors collect at Madrid–Barajas (MAD), about 200 km south-east, or the smaller Valladolid Airport (VLL), about 120 km north-east.
How long does it take to drive from Madrid to Salamanca?
Around 2 hours via the A-50 and AP-51, covering roughly 200 km. The toll motorway from Ávila is the fastest option; a free alternative exists but takes slightly longer.
Can I drive into Salamanca's historic centre?
Much of the area around the Plaza Mayor and the university is pedestrianised or access-restricted. It's easiest to park in one of the paid car parks at the edge of the old town and explore on foot.
How far is Ávila from Salamanca?
About 90 km, roughly an hour's drive, making Ávila's medieval walls an easy half-day trip from Salamanca.
Which car hire companies serve Salamanca?
Salamanca has no airport of its own with regular flights, so the main options are at Madrid and Valladolid airports, where Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, Europcar and Sixt all operate. Compare all Salamanca car hire prices →
