Rent a Car in Kigali

Kigali itself is famously clean, hilly and easy to get around, with motorbike taxis, buses and ride-hailing apps covering the centre well. The real reason to hire a car here is what lies beyond the city limits. Akagera National Park, about 100 km / 2.5 hours away on a fully paved road, is Rwanda's savannah safari park, home to lions, elephants, hippos and giraffes, with an entrance fee of around $40 per person per day. Volcanoes National Park, roughly 105 km / 2.5-3 hours north-west, sits in the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes and is the base for gorilla trekking. And Lake Kivu, with lakeside towns such as Rubavu (Gisenyi), Karongi (Kibuye) and Rusizi, adds beaches and quiet coastal roads to unwind after the parks.

None of these three are a quick hop by public transport. Buses connect the main towns on their own schedule and don't reach park gates, so with your own car you set the pace: an early start for Akagera's game drives, or a full loop taking in Akagera, Volcanoes National Park and Lake Kivu in one trip — around 830 km in total, with roughly $80-120 in fuel. Main roads between the cities are paved and in good condition; it's the final stretch into each park where the going gets rougher and an SUV earns its keep.
