Malpensa (MXP) is about 50 km northwest of the city and handles most long-haul and international flights; Linate (LIN) is just 7 km east, convenient for domestic and short-haul European routes; Bergamo-Orio al Serio (BGY) is about 45 km northeast and is the main base for low-cost carriers.   • Area C and Area B restrict the centre. Milan's historic core (Area C) charges a daily entry fee and is monitored by cameras, while a much larger Area B low-emission zone covers most of the city and bans older diesel vehicles entirely. The simplest approach is to park at a peripheral garage or your hotel and walk or take the metro into the centre.
  • Motorways and tolls are unavoidable on longer trips. The A4, A1 and A8 fan out from Milan toward the lakes, Turin and Bologna, and Italian autostrade charge tolls collected at booths or by transponder — most hire cars can be fitted with a Telepass on request.
