Rent a Car in Los Angeles

Los Angeles International (LAX) is the main gateway, but the city itself is what makes a hire car essential: LA has no single centre, and its neighbourhoods are spread across a sprawling freeway grid that public transit only partly covers.

Why hire a car in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is really a collection of distinct cities and neighbourhoods — Hollywood, Santa Monica, Downtown, Pasadena, Long Beach — connected by an enormous freeway network rather than a compact centre. The Metro rail system has expanded in recent years but still leaves large parts of the county disconnected, so a hire car remains the standard way to get from the beaches to the hills to the studios without stitching together rideshares all week.

A car also opens up the wider region: Malibu's coastline along the Pacific Coast Highway, the wine country of the Santa Ynez Valley about two hours north-west, Joshua Tree National Park roughly two and a half hours east, and San Diego just under two hours south. LAX is the primary international gateway, but Burbank (BUR), Long Beach, Ontario (ONT) and John Wayne/Santa Ana (SNA) airports also serve the metro area and can be worth checking if they're closer to your hotel or offer a shorter queue for pickup.

What to know before you drive in Los Angeles

  • LAX has a consolidated Rental Car Facility (LAX-it) reached by a short shuttle from the terminals, about 25 km south-west of downtown. Compare Los Angeles car hire prices →
  • Freeway traffic is a defining feature of the city. The 405, 101 and 10 freeways jam for hours most weekdays, especially 7–10am and 3–7pm. Google Maps' traffic layer is essential — the same trip can take 20 minutes or 90 depending on the time you leave.
  • No cash toll booths, but a few express lanes charge electronically. The 91 and 110 Express Lanes bill via transponder or plate; most routes around the city, though, are toll-free.
  • Parking varies hugely by neighbourhood. Downtown and Hollywood rely on paid garages, while Santa Monica and Venice have metered street parking that fills up fast near the beach on weekends.
  • Extending the trip? San Diego is under two hours south on I-5, and Las Vegas is about a four-hour drive east through the desert.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Do I need a hire car in Los Angeles?
Yes, for almost any visit that goes beyond a single neighbourhood. LA's public transit has improved but still doesn't connect the beaches, the hills and the valleys efficiently — a hire car is the standard way to see the city.
Which airport should I use for a hire car in LA?
LAX is the main international gateway with the largest selection of providers, reached via a shuttle to the consolidated LAX-it Rental Car Facility. Burbank, Long Beach, Ontario and John Wayne/Santa Ana also serve the metro area and can mean shorter queues if they're closer to your destination.
How bad is LA traffic really?
It's a genuine planning factor. The 405, 101 and 10 freeways can turn a 20-minute trip into an hour and a half during weekday rush periods. Building buffer time into your schedule, especially for airport runs, is worth it.
Are there tolls in Los Angeles?
Most of the freeway network is free. A few express lanes, like on the 91 and 110, charge electronic tolls that vary with congestion — regular lanes on the same freeways remain toll-free.
Can I do a one-way rental from LA to San Diego or Las Vegas?
Yes, most major agencies offer one-way rentals to both cities, usually with a drop-off fee. San Diego is under two hours south and Las Vegas about four hours east, making either a solid weekend extension.
Which car hire companies operate in Los Angeles?
Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, National, Alamo, Budget, Dollar and Thrifty all operate from the LAX-it Rental Car Facility, with several also present at Burbank, Long Beach, Ontario and John Wayne/Santa Ana. Compare all Los Angeles car hire prices →
