What to know before you drive from Playa de las Américas

  • TF-1 is your gateway. The south motorway runs right past the resort and connects directly to the rest of Tenerife. North to Santa Cruz takes about 60 minutes; the turn-off for Teide is signposted from the TF-28 at Adeje.
  • Teide: go early and book the cable car. The drive from Playa de las Américas to the Teide base takes about 50 minutes. The cable car tickets sell out — book online before you travel. The summit area is cold even in summer; take a layer.
  • Masca requires a small car. The road down to Masca village is narrow with tight hairpin bends. A small or compact car is manageable; anything long or wide will struggle. Allow 45 minutes from the resort and go before 10 a.m. to find parking.
  • Fuel is cheap. Canary Islands tax rules keep petrol significantly cheaper than mainland Spain or northern Europe. No need to economise.
