Why hire a car in Tbilisi

Tbilisi is the easiest place in Georgia to pick up a car, and once you have one the whole country opens up. The capital itself is walkable, but the trips people really come for are out of town: the dramatic Georgian Military Highway north to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) and the Gergeti Trinity Church, the rolling Kakheti wine route through Sighnaghi and Telavi, and the cave monasteries of Davit Gareja on the semi-desert Azerbaijani border. None of these are quick or comfortable to reach by public transport.

Buses and shared marshrutka minivans do run, but they leave when full, skip the smaller villages, and strand you for the detours and viewpoints that make the drive. With your own car you set the pace, stop at roadside Kakhetian wine cellars, and reach trailheads that no timetable serves. Kazbegi is roughly a three-hour drive each way, and Sighnaghi about two, so even day trips become realistic. Compare the options and you will usually find car hire cheaper and far more flexible than chaining together tours.

What to know before you drive in Tbilisi

  • Drive on the right. Traffic in Georgia keeps to the right-hand side of the road, and you overtake on the left. If you are used to driving in the UK or Ireland, give yourself a few quiet minutes to adjust before you join Tbilisi's busy junctions such as Heroes' Square, and take extra care at roundabouts.
  • Airport pickup at TBS. Tbilisi International (TBS) sits about 17 km east of the centre, roughly 20-30 minutes by car via the airport road. Most suppliers either have a desk in arrivals or meet you there with the car, which saves wrestling luggage across the city. Compare Tbilisi airport car hire prices →
  • Roads and conditions. Main highways are good, but mountain routes like the Military Highway over the Jvari Pass to Gudauri can be narrow, steep and snow-affected from late autumn into spring, and local driving is assertive. For Kazbegi, Gudauri or anywhere off the asphalt, choose a 4x4 or higher-clearance car rather than the cheapest economy hatchback.
  • Fuel and parking. Petrol stations are plentiful and cheap by European standards, and most take cards. Parking in the hilly Old Town below Narikala is the real headache: lanes are tight and spaces scarce, so use a hotel with parking or a paid lot and explore the centre on foot.
  • Licence, insurance and excess. Most visitors can drive on their home licence; an International Driving Permit alongside it is a sensible backup. Check the insurance excess (deposit) blocked on your card and consider full cover so a scratch on a gravel road does not cost you the deposit.
  • Local tip. Hand the car back the day before you fly out and keep it parked overnight, rather than driving tired through unfamiliar streets to TBS at dawn. Heading further? You can also compare cars for the wider Georgia trip or pick up in Batumi on the Black Sea coast.

Where to pick up your car in Tbilisi

Most travellers collect at Tbilisi International Airport (TBS), about 17 km east of the centre, though city-centre and hotel-delivery pickups are also widely available.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Tbilisi?
Yes, if you plan to leave the city. Tbilisi itself is walkable, but a car is the best way to reach Kazbegi, the Kakheti wine region and Davit Gareja, where public transport is slow or non-existent. For getting around the centre only, you may not need one at all.
What do I need to hire a car in Tbilisi?
You will need a valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, and your passport. Most nationalities can drive on their home licence, but carrying an International Driving Permit alongside it is recommended. Check what each supplier requires →
Which side of the road do they drive on in Georgia?
Georgia drives on the right, and you overtake on the left. Roads in Tbilisi are busy and driving is assertive, while mountain routes like the Georgian Military Highway can be narrow and steep, so allow time to adjust and pick a 4x4 if you are heading into the highlands.
Can I pick up a hire car at Tbilisi airport?
Yes. Tbilisi International (TBS) is about 17 km east of the centre, and most suppliers offer pickup either at a desk in arrivals or by meeting you with the car. Compare airport pickup options for TBS →
How much is the insurance excess and should I take extra cover?
The excess (deposit) is held on your card and can run to several hundred lari or euros depending on the car. For peace of mind on gravel mountain roads like the route to Kazbegi, it is usually worth adding full or zero-excess cover so a minor scrape does not cost you the deposit.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Tbilisi?
In Tbilisi you can compare established Georgian agencies, such as Naniko Rent a Car, alongside the international suppliers that operate at the airport. Rather than assuming a brand is present, we show you the suppliers actually serving TBS and the city so you can pick on price, car type and cover. See who is available for your dates →
