Why hiring a car in Alicante makes sense

Alicante sits at the midpoint of the Costa Blanca — within easy reach of lively northern resorts around Benidorm and Calpe, and quieter southern beaches near Torrevieja and Guardamar. The city itself is walkable, with the Castillo de Santa Bárbara rising above the esplanade and the Mercado Central just off the main drag, but the surrounding region only opens up with your own wheels. The A-7 motorway runs the length of the coast, and Dénia — departure point for the ferry to Ibiza — is around an hour's drive north.

Inland, the switchbacking road up to Guadalest and its reservoir is one of the coast's real highlights, and the white hill towns of Altea, Polop and Callosa d'en Sarrià are all short drives away. The Salt Lakes at Torrevieja glow pink in summer and are easily combined with a beach stop further south. A hire car collected at ALC on arrival is the most practical way to make the most of this stretch of coast — from your first day to your last.

What to know before you drive around Alicante

  • Collect at Alicante–Elche Airport (ALC). Most hire desks are at the terminal or a nearby car park served by a shuttle. ALC is about 10 km south-west of the city centre — around 15 minutes by road. Compare Alicante car hire prices →
  • AP-7 toll vs A-7 free motorway. The AP-7 is faster for longer coastal runs; the parallel A-7 is free but slower in summer traffic. Toll booths take cash and card — most rentals don't include a transponder, so budget €5–10 each way for the AP-7.
  • Parking in the city centre. Old town streets near the castle are narrow and heavily parked. Use the underground car parks near the Explanada or on Avenida Alfonso X (around €1.50–2/hour) and walk the rest.
  • Speed limits and cameras. Spain drives on the right: 120 km/h on motorways, 90 on secondary roads, 50 in town. Fixed and mobile cameras are common on the AP-7 and in urban areas.
  • Guadalest gets busy by mid-morning. The road is narrow in places and coaches start arriving around 10 a.m. Leave early to have the village and the viewpoints to yourself.
  • Heading further? The coast road links naturally to Málaga for a longer trip, and ferries from Dénia reach Ibiza in around two hours.

Where to collect your hire car in Alicante

Most hire desks are at Alicante–Elche Airport (ALC), about 10 km south-west of the city centre. City-centre pickups are available from some agencies if you prefer to collect after checking in.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Alicante?
Yes, if you want to explore beyond the city. The Costa Blanca stretches over 200 km from Dénia to Pilar de la Horadada, and inland routes to Guadalest, the Jalón wine valley and Villena are all car territory. For a beach-only stay in the city itself, you can manage without one.
Where do I pick up my hire car in Alicante?
Alicante–Elche Airport (ALC), about 10 km south-west of the city, is the main pickup point. All major hire brands and many local agencies have desks there. Some companies also offer city-centre pickup if you'd rather collect the car after settling in.
Do I need a toll tag for the AP-7?
No — toll booths on the AP-7 accept cash and card. If you only plan short coastal hops, the free A-7 is a perfectly good alternative. A toll tag (via-T) can be requested from some agencies but isn't standard on most bookings.
What driving licence do I need in Spain?
An EU or UK driving licence is accepted in Spain without any additional permit. Holders of non-EU licences should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. You'll also need a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit hold.
How far is Benidorm from Alicante by car?
Around 45 km via the AP-7, taking about 35–40 minutes. The free A-7 takes 50–60 minutes depending on summer traffic. Both routes are well-signposted.
Which car hire companies operate in Alicante?
All major international brands — Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, Budget, Sixt and others — operate at ALC. Local Spanish agencies often offer keener prices, particularly for longer rentals. Compare all Alicante car hire prices →
