Alicante sits at the midpoint of the Costa Blanca — within easy reach of lively northern resorts around Benidorm and Calpe, and quieter southern beaches near Torrevieja and Guardamar. The city itself is walkable, with the Castillo de Santa Bárbara rising above the esplanade and the Mercado Central just off the main drag, but the surrounding region only opens up with your own wheels. The A-7 motorway runs the length of the coast, and Dénia — departure point for the ferry to Ibiza — is around an hour's drive north.

Inland, the switchbacking road up to Guadalest and its reservoir is one of the coast's real highlights, and the white hill towns of Altea, Polop and Callosa d'en Sarrià are all short drives away. The Salt Lakes at Torrevieja glow pink in summer and are easily combined with a beach stop further south. A hire car collected at ALC on arrival is the most practical way to make the most of this stretch of coast — from your first day to your last.
