Rent a Car in Oakland

Oakland itself has good BART connections to San Francisco and around the East Bay, but the wider Bay Area experience — Berkeley's hills, the Wine Country of Napa and Sonoma, the redwoods of Muir Woods, the coastal drive down to Santa Cruz — needs a car. Many Bay Area visitors specifically choose Oakland International over SFO because hire car availability is often better and queues shorter, especially during peak travel periods.

Oakland is also a genuinely useful base for a longer California trip. Napa Valley is about an hour and a half north-east, and Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Nevada foothills are roughly three to four hours east — both realistic extensions if your schedule allows more than a city stay. For a Bay Area visit combined with wine country or the mountains, picking up your car here rather than in San Francisco often means an easier exit from the airport.
