Ibiza is small enough to cross in under an hour, but its best corners are scattered and badly linked. The buzz of Eivissa town and Dalt Vila feels worlds away from the pine-covered north around Sant Joan and the wild cove at Benirràs, or the postcard view of Es Vedrà from Cala d'Hort in the southwest. The local buses cover the main resorts in summer but thin out fast in the shoulder season, and many of the prettiest calas — Cala Salada, Es Portitxol, Aigües Blanques — sit at the end of a track no timetable reaches.

With your own car you skip the changes and the long waits at the Sant Antoni or Eivissa bus stations, and you can be at a quiet beach before the day-trippers arrive. For a week's holiday, car hire almost always works out cheaper and freer than taxis — which are scarce and pricey in peak season — and it lets you chase a sunset at Cala Conta one evening and a market at Las Dalias the next without anyone else's schedule getting in the way.
