Why renting a car in Ibiza pays off

Ibiza is small enough to cross in under an hour, but its best corners are scattered and badly linked. The buzz of Eivissa town and Dalt Vila feels worlds away from the pine-covered north around Sant Joan and the wild cove at Benirràs, or the postcard view of Es Vedrà from Cala d'Hort in the southwest. The local buses cover the main resorts in summer but thin out fast in the shoulder season, and many of the prettiest calas — Cala Salada, Es Portitxol, Aigües Blanques — sit at the end of a track no timetable reaches.

With your own car you skip the changes and the long waits at the Sant Antoni or Eivissa bus stations, and you can be at a quiet beach before the day-trippers arrive. For a week's holiday, car hire almost always works out cheaper and freer than taxis — which are scarce and pricey in peak season — and it lets you chase a sunset at Cala Conta one evening and a market at Las Dalias the next without anyone else's schedule getting in the way.

What to know before you drive in Ibiza

  • You drive on the right. If you're used to the UK or Ireland, take your first roundabout slowly and keep in mind the car's bulk is on your left. It catches most people out for the first day, then becomes second nature.
  • Automatics are scarce. Most cheap hire cars on the island are manual. If you only drive automatic at home, book one well in advance — they're limited and sell out fast in summer, often at a premium.
  • Mind the excess. Basic cover (CDW) still leaves you liable for an excess on any damage. Add full protection at booking or check whether your premium card already covers car hire — sorting it beforehand beats being upsold at the desk.
  • A UK or EU licence is fine. For a short holiday you don't need an International Driving Permit — your full UK, Irish or EU photocard licence is accepted. Bring the card itself and your passport for ID.
  • Parking and narrow lanes. Eivissa and Sant Antoni use paid blue zones in season, while many northern coves have small dirt car parks that fill by mid-morning. The lanes up to spots like Cala d'Hort are tight, so a compact is easier than a big SUV. Compare Ibiza car hire prices here ↗

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Ibiza?
For anything longer than a couple of days, yes. The island is small but its best beaches and villages — Benirràs, Cala d'Hort, the north around Sant Joan — are poorly served by bus and pricey to reach by taxi. A car lets you get to the quiet coves early and move at your own pace.
What do I need to rent a car in Ibiza?
A valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, and usually to be 21 or over (with a young-driver surcharge under 25). Bring your passport for ID. A full UK, Irish or EU licence is fine — no international permit needed for short stays.
Can I drive to Es Vedrà and Cala d'Hort?
Yes. The road down to Cala d'Hort, with its famous view of the Es Vedrà islet, is paved and easy enough, though the final stretch narrows and the small car parks fill early. Arrive before mid-morning in summer to be sure of a space, or come for sunset once the crowds thin.
Manual or automatic in Ibiza?
Most cheap rentals are manual. If you only drive automatic at home, book one well in advance — automatics are limited on the island and sell out fast, especially in July and August. Reserving early is also the only reliable way to keep the price down.
What does the basic insurance cover?
Basic cover (CDW) handles collision and theft but leaves you with an excess you'd pay on any damage, and it often excludes tyres, windscreen and the underside. You can cut the excess to zero at booking. If your premium credit card already covers car hire, check before paying for extra cover.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Ibiza?
We compare the big international names (Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, Budget) alongside trusted Ibiza local firms such as OK Mobility, Record Go and Centauro — over 1,000 providers in total. You see each price and book whichever suits you best, with free cancellation.
