Why hire a car in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik's Old City is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most spectacular in the Mediterranean — but it's also small enough to walk in an afternoon, and the rest of the region demands a car. The Pelješac Peninsula, whose wines rank among Croatia's finest, stretches 65 km north-west and ends in a narrow neck that bridges the split in Croatia's coastline. The coastal road from Dubrovnik to Split passes through Ston, Orebić and the ferry crossing to Korčula island, and then continues through some of the most dramatic Adriatic scenery on the continent.

Cross into Montenegro in under an hour and you reach the UNESCO Bay of Kotor — arguably more dramatic than Dubrovnik itself, and far less crowded. The walled city of Kotor, the mountain road up to Lovćen National Park and the Montenegrin Riviera around Budva are all within easy reach. Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is ideally positioned: 22 km south of the Old City and just 15 km from the Montenegrin border, so a hire car collected at arrival gives you the entire south Adriatic as your territory.

What to know before you drive around Dubrovnik

  • Collect at Dubrovnik Airport (DBV). Hire desks are in the arrivals hall, 22 km south of the Old City. The drive into Dubrovnik takes around 25 minutes on the D8. Compare Dubrovnik car hire prices →
  • Don't drive into the Old City. Vehicles are banned inside the walls. Park in one of the paid car parks at Ilijina Glavica (above the city) or Gruž harbour and walk or take the cable car. Arrive early in summer — parking fills by 9 a.m. in July and August.
  • Cross-border note for Montenegro. Inform your hire agency if you plan to cross into Montenegro — a small fee usually applies for the green card extension. Most major agencies allow it. The border crossing near Karasovići is typically quick outside peak season.
  • Croatia drives on the right. Speed limits: 130 km/h on motorways, 90 on main roads, 50 in town. Drink-driving limits are strict (0.5 mg/ml for adults, zero for drivers under 24 and drivers with less than 2 years' experience).
  • Pelješac Bridge connects the peninsula. Since 2022 the new bridge at Komarna bypasses the Bosnian coastal strip at Neum, making the drive to Split continuous Croatian territory. No border crossing needed.
  • Also nearby: Kotor, Split and Mostar are all within 2–3 hours and natural extensions of a Dubrovnik hire car trip.

Where to collect your hire car in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), 22 km south of the Old City, is the main pickup hub. City-centre offices near Gruž harbour suit those who prefer to collect the car only when heading out of the city.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Dubrovnik?
Yes, for anything beyond the Old City walls. The Pelješac wine peninsula, the Elafiti Islands ferry ports, the Montenegrin Bay of Kotor and the coastal road to Split are all best explored with your own car. Public transport in this region is limited and slow.
Where do I pick up a hire car in Dubrovnik?
Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), 22 km south of the Old City, is the main pickup point with desks in the arrivals hall. City-centre offices near the Gruž harbour bus station are also available.
Can I drive a hire car from Dubrovnik to Montenegro?
Yes, most hire agencies allow it for a small cross-border fee — typically €10–30 for the green card extension. Confirm when booking. The border near Karasovići is about 15 km from the airport and usually straightforward.
Is parking available near Dubrovnik Old City?
Yes, but it fills early in summer. The main paid car parks are at Ilijina Glavica above the Ploče Gate and at Gruž harbour. Expect €1–2/hour. Arrive before 9 a.m. in July and August or you'll circle for a long time.
How far is Kotor from Dubrovnik?
About 95 km via the border crossing near Karasovići, taking around 1 hour 20 minutes. Kotor's walled city is one of the highlights of the entire Adriatic — an easy day trip from Dubrovnik and well worth the short border formality.
Which car hire companies operate in Dubrovnik?
Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget, Sixt and Enterprise all operate at DBV. Local Croatian agencies often offer better rates, particularly for longer Dalmatian Coast trips. Compare all Dubrovnik car hire prices →
