Why hire a car in Kos

Kos is one of the flattest, most easy-going islands in the Dodecanese, and that makes it one of the best in Greece for driving yourself around. At around 45 km long, the island stretches from Kos Town in the north-east down to Kefalos in the south-west, with the airport tucked away near Antimacheia in between. Unlike mountainous islands such as Rhodes or Corfu, Kos rewards a relaxed pace behind the wheel — which is also why it's popular with cyclists, but a car gets you further, faster, and with air conditioning on a hot August afternoon.

Kos Town itself is worth a full day: the medieval Castle of the Knights guards the harbour, the ancient Agora sprawls a few streets back, and the enormous Hippocrates Plane Tree in the main square is traditionally said to mark where Hippocrates — the "father of medicine" — once taught. A few kilometres outside town, the Asklepion sanctuary sits on a hillside with sweeping views across to Turkey, and it's a site best reached with your own transport since there's no dedicated public bus route running frequently. From there a hire car opens up the rest of the island: the windsurfing beaches of Tigaki and Marmari on the flat north coast, and Kefalos in the south-west with Paradise Beach, Camel Beach and the little islet of Kastri just offshore.

What to know before you drive in Kos

  • Collect at Kos Island "Hippocrates" Airport (KGS). The airport is around 24 km south-west of Kos Town, near Antimacheia — noticeably further out than on many other Greek islands, and without a reliable, frequent public transit link into town. Picking up a hire car straight from arrivals is genuinely the easiest way in. Compare Kos car hire prices →
  • Greece drives on the right. Kos is unusually flat for a Greek island, and the roads connecting Kos Town, Tigaki, Marmari and Kefalos are mostly straight and easy compared with mountainous islands. Speed limit is 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the main road.
  • Kos Town parking. The harbour area and old town streets are narrow and largely pedestrianised. Use one of the car parks near the Castle of the Knights or along the seafront rather than trying to drive into the centre.
  • The Asklepion needs your own transport. This ancient healing sanctuary, a few km outside Kos Town, has no frequent public bus service — a hire car (or taxi) is the practical way to reach it.
  • Petrol stations. Fuel up in Kos Town, Tigaki or Kefalos before heading to quieter beaches — stations thin out along the flatter middle stretch of the island.
  • Ferries to other islands. Kos connects by regular ferry to Rhodes, as well as Kalymnos, Nisyros and Bodrum in Turkey. Leave the hire car at the port in Kos Town if you're island-hopping by ferry.

Where to collect your hire car in Kos

Kos Island "Hippocrates" Airport (KGS), about 24 km from Kos Town near Antimacheia, is the main pickup hub. Some agencies also offer pickup in Kos Town itself for ferry arrivals.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Kos?
Yes. Kos Airport is about 24 km from Kos Town with no reliable frequent bus link, so a hire car straight from arrivals is genuinely useful. The island is long and flat, and a car lets you reach Tigaki, Marmari, Kefalos and the Asklepion easily on your own schedule.
Where do I pick up a hire car in Kos?
Kos Island "Hippocrates" Airport (KGS), about 24 km south-west of Kos Town near Antimacheia, is the main pickup point, with most major agencies represented in arrivals. Some agencies also have desks in Kos Town for those arriving by ferry.
Are the roads in Kos difficult to drive?
No — Kos is one of the flattest Greek islands, roughly 45 km long, and the main roads between Kos Town, Tigaki, Marmari and Kefalos are straight and easy compared with mountainous islands like Rhodes or Corfu. Town centre streets and the old harbour area are narrower, so park and walk in.
How far is Kos Airport from Kos Town?
About 24 km, roughly 25–30 minutes by car near Antimacheia. There's no reliable frequent public transit connecting the airport to town, which makes picking up a rental car at arrivals the practical choice for most visitors.
Can I take a ferry from Kos to Rhodes with a hire car?
Regular passenger ferries run between Kos and Rhodes, along with other Dodecanese islands and Bodrum in Turkey, but hire cars generally aren't taken on board. It's simplest to leave your Kos rental at the port and pick up a separate car on arrival — see our Rhodes car hire page for details.
Which car hire companies operate in Kos?
International brands including Hertz, Avis and Europcar operate at Kos Airport (KGS) alongside local Greek agencies. Local operators often know the island well and offer competitive rates on the compact cars best suited to Kos's town streets. Compare all Kos car hire prices →
