Why renting a car in Lanzarote pays off

Lanzarote is small enough to feel manageable but spread out enough that walking and buses won't cut it. The resorts cluster in the south around Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen, while the wild stuff — the surf beach at Famara, the cliffs at Mirador del Río, the wine country of La Geria and the lava plains of Timanfaya — is scattered to the north and west. The capital, Arrecife, sits in the middle, but it's not where you'll spend your days.

The island's buses (the guaguas) link the main towns reasonably well, yet they barely reach César Manrique's landmarks, the Jameos del Agua or the northern villages like Haría and Teguise. With your own car you can do the whole north in a day, stop at a roadside bodega in La Geria, and reach the quiet beaches of the Papagayo coast that no timetable will get you to. For a week's holiday, car hire almost always works out cheaper and freer than booking a string of organised tours.

What to know before you drive in Lanzarote

  • You drive on the right. If you're used to the UK or Ireland, take your first roundabout slowly and remember the bulk of the car is on your left. An automatic makes the change far easier — but they're scarce here, so book one early or you'll be stuck with a manual.
  • Most cheap cars are manual. The vast majority of budget hire cars in Lanzarote have a manual gearbox, and the limited automatics sell out fast in summer and over Easter. If you only drive automatic at home, reserve well in advance.
  • Your home licence is enough. A full UK or EU licence is fine for short stays — you don't need an International Driving Permit. Bring the photocard and your passport for ID, plus a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit.
  • Mind the excess. Basic cover (CDW) still leaves you liable for an excess on any damage — and Lanzarote's open lava-rock car parks and gusty roads cause plenty of scrapes. Add full protection at booking, or check whether your premium card already covers car hire.
  • Roads are easy, fuel is cheap. The LZ-1 north and LZ-2 south are smooth and toll-free, and thanks to the Canary tax regime petrol costs noticeably less than back home. Compare Lanzarote car hire prices here ↗

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Lanzarote?
For anything longer than a couple of days, yes. The best parts of the island — Timanfaya, Famara, Mirador del Río, La Geria — are poorly served by bus, and a car lets you cover the whole north in a day. It almost always beats stringing together organised excursions on both cost and freedom.
What do I need to rent a car in Lanzarote?
A full driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, and usually to be 21 or over (with a young-driver surcharge under 25). Bring your passport for ID. UK and EU licences are fine — no International Driving Permit needed for short stays.
Can I drive to Timanfaya National Park in a hire car?
Yes. You can drive right up to the Timanfaya visitor entrance at Islote de Hilario and park there. Note that you can't drive your own car through the volcanic route itself — that part is done on the park's coach tour — but the road to the gate is paved and easy in any hire car.
Manual or automatic in Lanzarote?
Most cheap rentals are manual. Automatics are limited on the island and go quickly, so if you only drive automatic at home, book one well in advance. The roads themselves are gentle, with few steep climbs, so a manual is perfectly comfortable if you're used to one.
What does the basic insurance cover?
Basic cover (CDW) handles collision and theft but leaves you with an excess you'd pay on any damage. You can reduce it to zero at booking. If your premium credit card already covers car hire, check the terms before paying for extra cover at the desk.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Lanzarote?
We compare the big international names (Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, Budget) alongside trusted Lanzarote local firms such as Cicar, AutoReisen and TopCar — over 1,000 providers in total. You see each price and book whichever suits you best, with free cancellation.
