Why hiring a car in Yerevan is worth it

Yerevan itself is walkable, but Armenia's best days out sit just beyond it — and the bus network barely reaches them. The Garni temple and Geghard monastery are an easy half-day loop east of the city along the Azat gorge; Khor Virap, with Mount Ararat filling the horizon, is under an hour south down the M-2; and Lake Sevan glitters about 60 km to the northeast. With a car you stop where you like, linger for the view, and skip the marshrutka timetables that often run once and leave you stranded.

Go further and the payoff grows. The mountain road north to Dilijan — through the Sevan pass and the long tunnel that drops you into beech forest and switchbacks — is one of the country's prettiest drives, and many travellers carry on overland to Tbilisi in Georgia. Public transport links these spots slowly, if at all, so for anything more than a city break, car hire turns a long list of "maybes" into a relaxed, do-it-your-way itinerary.

What to know before you drive in Yerevan

  • You drive on the right. Armenia uses right-hand traffic, so if you're coming from the UK or Ireland, give yourself a few minutes in the car park before pulling out. Yerevan's big roundabouts — like the one circling the Hraparak area near Republic Square — and an assertive local driving style take some getting used to, so stay calm and keep to the right.
  • Pick up at Zvartnots (EVN) or in town. Most rentals are collected at Zvartnots International Airport, about 12 km west of the centre, and many agencies will also deliver to your city hotel. Airport pickup is the simplest if you're heading straight out to Khor Virap or Sevan. Compare Yerevan car hire prices →
  • Surfaces change quickly. The M-2 south to Khor Virap and the M-4 northeast to Sevan are well surfaced, but the climb toward Dilijan and the village lanes around Garni can throw up potholes, livestock and unlit edges. Drive in daylight when you can, and take the high passes slowly, especially after spring snowmelt or autumn rain.
  • Fuel is easy, tolls are not a worry. Petrol and gas stations are plentiful on the main highways and there are no motorway tolls in Armenia. Many local cars run on LPG, and some forecourts lead with gas, so top up a petrol hire car in Yerevan before long rural stretches toward Sevan or the south.
  • Licence, age and the excess. Bring your full driving licence and passport; most UK, US and EU licences are accepted, though an International Driving Permit is a cheap, sensible backup. Check the insurance excess on your quote and reduce it at booking if you want peace of mind on the rougher mountain roads.
  • Local tip: heading to Georgia? Plenty of visitors drive the overland route north toward the Bagratashen border and on to Tbilisi. Tell the agency first — cross-border travel needs the right paperwork and a green card, and not every car is cleared to leave Armenia.

Where to pick up your car in Yerevan

Most travellers collect at Zvartnots International Airport (EVN), about 12 km west of the centre, while many local agencies also deliver to hotels in central Yerevan.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Yerevan?

For a city-only stay, no — central Yerevan is walkable. But the moment you want Garni, Geghard, Khor Virap, Lake Sevan or Dilijan, a car pays for itself, since buses and marshrutkas to these sights are slow or non-existent. It turns scattered day trips into one easy, flexible itinerary.

What do I need to hire a car in Yerevan?

You'll need a full driving licence, your passport for ID, and a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Most UK, US and EU licences are accepted; an International Driving Permit is an inexpensive backup worth carrying. Drivers are usually 21 or over, sometimes with a young-driver surcharge.

Which side of the road do they drive on in Armenia?

Armenia drives on the right. If you're used to the left, take it slowly on your first Yerevan roundabouts and remember to keep right at junctions. An automatic makes the adjustment easier, so book one early if you'd rather not juggle gears on the climb to Dilijan.

Can I pick up a car at Zvartnots Airport?

Yes. Zvartnots International (EVN) is the main pickup point, about 12 km from central Yerevan, and counters are easy to reach on arrival. Many agencies will also deliver the car to your city hotel. Compare airport and city pickup deals →

Can I drive my Yerevan hire car to Tbilisi, Georgia?

Often yes, but only with the agency's permission. The overland route north via the Bagratashen crossing to Tbilisi is popular, yet cross-border travel needs a green card and the right paperwork, and not every car is cleared to leave Armenia. Always confirm before you book and budget extra time at the border.

Which car rental companies can I compare in Yerevan?

We compare the trusted local Yerevan agencies based at Zvartnots Airport and around the city, plus any international brands that genuinely operate in Armenia for your dates. Rather than assume a big global name is present, you see exactly who's available and at what price, then book the best option with free cancellation. Compare Yerevan providers →
