The big international brands you'll find across most of Europe don't operate in Northern Cyprus — Sixt, Hertz, Avis and Europcar all explicitly ban their cars from crossing here, even though they're active just across the Green Line in the south. What you'll find instead are established local operators such as British Rent A Car, Pacific Rent A Car, Oscar Rent A Car and Nissa Car Rental, who know the mountain roads and the Green Line rules better than any international call centre. Why hire a car in Kyrenia

Kyrenia's old town, with its Venetian harbour and castle sitting right over the water, is small enough to see on foot in an afternoon. The real reason to hire a car here is everything around it. St. Hilarion Castle, a ruined mountain fortress up in the Five Finger (Beşparmak) range that's often compared to the towers in Disney's Snow White, is a 20-30 minute drive into the hills. Bellapais Abbey, the 13th-century Augustinian ruin that Lawrence Durrell wrote about in Bitter Lemons, sits in the village just above town and is usually combined with St. Hilarion in the same trip. Further east, the Karpaz Peninsula and Alagadi Beach — a nesting site for loggerhead and green turtles monitored by the Society for the Protection of Turtles (SPOT) — make a longer, full-day drive along the coast.

None of this is realistic without your own car. Northern Cyprus has no railway, and the shared dolmuş minivans run limited routes between the main towns, not up the mountain road to a ruined castle or along the quiet lanes of Karpaz. With a hire car you can do St. Hilarion and Bellapais back to back in a morning, or give the coast road to Alagadi a full afternoon, on your own schedule rather than a bus timetable.

What to know before you drive in Kyrenia

  • You drive on the left. Northern Cyprus is one of the few places in this part of the Mediterranean where traffic keeps to the left, a leftover of British rule — unlike Turkey itself, just across the water, which drives on the right. If you're arriving via Turkey or continental Europe, give yourself a few careful minutes before joining the traffic along Kyrenia's harbour front.
  • Ercan Airport is the only way in. The territory's sole airport, Ercan International (ECN), sits inland, roughly 41 km / 40 minutes from Kyrenia. There are no direct international flights because of the territory's diplomatic status, so every arrival routes through Turkey. Check with your supplier whether pickup is at the airport or in town. Compare Kyrenia car hire prices →
  • Documents. Foreign driving licences are valid here for up to 30 days; if yours isn't in the Roman alphabet, carrying an International Driving Permit alongside it is worth doing. Bring your passport and the rental agreement too. Most local companies set the minimum age at 25, though some accept drivers from 21 with a young-driver surcharge.
  • Roads and signage. Around 70% of Northern Cyprus's roughly 7,000 km of roads are paved, so expect potholes or unpaved stretches once you leave the main routes toward St. Hilarion or into the Karpaz countryside. Signage outside the tourist routes is mostly in Turkish, so set your sat-nav to Turkish place names (Girne, not Kyrenia) or you'll miss turns.
  • The Green Line and your insurance. Standard Northern Cyprus rental cover does not extend across the Green Line into the Republic of Cyprus (south), and most local companies simply ban it in the contract. If a day trip south is part of your plan, ask before you book — one of the suppliers we compare here has been known to allow it with advance notice, which you shouldn't assume applies to the rest.
  • Local tip. Kyrenia's harbour front is pedestrian-heavy and parking gets tight in high season. A smaller car is easier to park near the old town; save the SUV for anyone heading up into the Five Finger Mountains toward St. Hilarion.

Where to pick up your car in Kyrenia

Most visitors collect their car near Ercan International Airport (ECN), about 41 km / 40 minutes inland, though harbour-side pickup in Kyrenia itself is also available if you're already in town.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Kyrenia?
Yes, if you plan to leave the old town. Kyrenia itself is walkable, but St. Hilarion Castle, Bellapais Abbey and the turtle beaches of Karpaz only really work with your own car — there's no railway, and the shared dolmuş minivans cover limited routes between towns.
Which side of the road do they drive on in Northern Cyprus?
The left, unlike mainland Turkey just across the water, which drives on the right. It's a leftover of British colonial rule. Overtake on the right, and give yourself a few minutes to adjust before joining Kyrenia's harbour-front traffic.
What documents do I need to rent a car in Kyrenia?
A valid driving licence (foreign licences are good for up to 30 days here), your passport, and a credit card in the main driver's name. An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside your licence, especially if it isn't in the Roman alphabet. Check what each supplier requires →
How far is Kyrenia from the airport?
Northern Cyprus's only airport, Ercan International (ECN), is about 41 km / 40 minutes inland from Kyrenia. There are no direct international flights due to the territory's diplomatic status, so all routes connect through Turkey.
Can I take a Kyrenia rental car into the south of Cyprus?
Generally no — standard Northern Cyprus rental insurance doesn't cover the Green Line crossing into the Republic of Cyprus (south), and most local companies ban it outright in the contract. Always ask before booking if this is part of your trip; a small number of suppliers allow it with advance notice.
What's the best day trip from Kyrenia with a hire car?
St. Hilarion Castle and Bellapais Abbey combine well into a half-day loop in the hills above town. For a fuller day, the Karpaz Peninsula and the turtle-nesting beach at Alagadi make a longer, quieter drive along the coast.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Kyrenia?
Northern Cyprus's disputed status means the big international names — Sixt, Hertz, Avis, Europcar — don't operate here at all; their own rental terms explicitly ban taking a car across the Green Line. Instead you can compare established local suppliers such as British Rent A Car, Pacific Rent A Car, Oscar Rent A Car and Nissa Car Rental, each with its own strengths on price and cover.
