Why renting a car in Hvar pays off

Hvar is Croatia's sunniest island and one of the most visited in the Adriatic — but most visitors see only Hvar Town and whatever the boat taxi reaches. The island is 68 kilometres long and narrows to a spine of limestone hills that separates the north and south coasts. The interior is quilted with lavender fields, olive groves and medieval villages like Vrbanj, Dol and Vrisnik that see almost no tourist traffic. The south coast has the best beaches and many have no bus connection at all.

With a hire car you can drive the length of the island in a morning, stop at Stari Grad (a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest Greek colonial town in Croatia), explore the Stari Grad Plain and reach the far eastern tip at Sućuraj before the day trippers have even boarded their boats. Cars on Hvar are limited — particularly in July and August — so booking well ahead is essential.

What to know before you drive in Hvar

  • Getting a car onto Hvar. You can bring a hire car from the mainland via the Split–Stari Grad ferry (about 2 hours) or the Drvenik–Sućuraj ferry (35 minutes). Some rental companies are based in Hvar Town itself — check whether a local pickup is available to avoid the ferry cost.
  • Roads are narrow and hilly. Hvar has no motorways. The main road runs east-west along the ridge and is well paved; side roads to beaches and interior villages are often single-track with passing places. A small car is far easier than an SUV.
  • Hvar Town parking. Hvar Town has very limited parking and the approach road gets congested in peak season. Park outside the town walls and walk — the centre is small and easily explored on foot.
  • Fuel in Hvar Town or Stari Grad. The two main towns have petrol stations. Fill up there before heading east along the island — the eastern half has no stations.
  • Book very early in summer. Hvar has a small car fleet relative to demand. In July and August, cars booked less than two weeks ahead are almost impossible to find. Compare Hvar prices here ↗

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Hvar?
Yes, if you want to see beyond Hvar Town. The island is 68 km long and has lavender villages, a UNESCO-listed plain and south-coast beaches that are inaccessible without a car. For a stay of three days or more, hiring a car transforms what you can do.
How do I get a hire car to Hvar?
Two options: bring a car from the mainland on the Split–Stari Grad ferry (book in advance in summer — car spaces fill fast) or hire from a local company based on the island in Hvar Town or Stari Grad. Local pickup avoids the ferry queue and is often cheaper.
What do I need to rent a car in Hvar?
A valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit hold, and generally to be 21 or over (surcharges often apply under 25). Croatia is in the EU — EU licences are accepted without further documentation.
Can I drive across the whole island?
Yes. The main road (D116) runs the length of the island from Sucuraj in the east to the approach to Hvar Town in the west, passing through Stari Grad and the interior villages. The full east-to-west drive takes about 90 minutes without stops — the road is paved the entire way.
What size car should I hire in Hvar?
Small or compact. Hvar's roads — particularly the tracks down to beaches and into village centres — are narrow. A large car or SUV works fine on the main road but causes problems in the interior. An automatic is useful on the hilly terrain if you're not comfortable with a manual on steep inclines.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Hvar?
We compare the big international names (Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, Budget) alongside trusted Hvar local firms such as trusted local agencies — over 1,000 providers in total. You see each price and book whichever suits you best, with free cancellation.
