Rent a Car in Sorrento

Sorrento's town centre — Piazza Tasso, the lemon-scented lanes near Corso Italia, the clifftop gardens overlooking the bay — is made for walking, and a car adds nothing but parking headaches inside it. Where a hire car pays off is everything just outside town. Pompeii's ruins are about 30 minutes away, and the Amalfi Coast's most famous stretch — Positano, Amalfi, Ravello — starts right where Sorrento's peninsula ends.

That said, the coast road itself deserves a realistic warning: the SS163 is narrow, packed with switchbacks, and parking in Positano or Amalfi in high season ranges from difficult to nonexistent. Many visitors base themselves in Sorrento, drive only as far as needed, and use local buses or ferries for the busiest coastal towns. Naples and its Capodichino airport are about 50 km north, and Capri is a straightforward ferry from Sorrento's own port — no car required for the island.
