Compare car hire providers in Tashkent

Tashkent's rental market runs mostly on local and regional agencies rather than the big global chains, so we line up the providers that actually serve the city and TAS airport. You see the cars, conditions and the insurance excess up front, then book the deal that suits your trip with free cancellation.

Why hiring a car in Tashkent is worth it

Tashkent is the largest city in Central Asia and the natural gateway to a Silk Road road trip. The capital itself is easy going — wide, fairly orderly avenues, a clean metro and cheap taxis — so you don't strictly need a car to see Chorsu Bazaar, the Hazrati Imam complex or the Soviet-era mosaics dotted around town. The case for a rental starts the moment you want to leave the ring road.

Samarkand sits about 280 km southwest down the M39, and while the fast Afrosiyob train gets you there in a couple of hours, it can't detour to Shahrisabz, Timur's birthplace over the Takhtakaracha Pass, or wait while you photograph a roadside melon stall. Closer to home, the Chimgan and Beldersay mountains are an easy day trip northeast — a route public transport barely serves. With your own car you set the pace, link Tashkent to Samarkand and Bukhara on one loop, and reach the corners of Uzbekistan that tour buses skip entirely.

What to know before you drive in Tashkent

  • You drive on the right. Traffic in Uzbekistan keeps to the right-hand side and overtakes on the left, so if you're coming from the UK or Ireland, take your first junctions slowly until it feels natural. The car's bulk now sits to your left — give yourself a quiet street or two to adjust before joining the main avenues.
  • Pick up at Tashkent International (TAS). Most visitors collect at the airport, where several agencies have desks; you can also arrange a downtown handover or delivery to your hotel. Confirm the exact meeting point and opening hours when you book, as some smaller local operators staff the airport on request rather than around the clock.
  • City roads are wide, the open road less so. Tashkent's boulevards are generous and signposting is improving, but expect assertive lane changes and the odd unannounced U-turn. Out on the M39 to Samarkand the surface is mostly good; watch for slow trucks, livestock near villages and the occasional police checkpoint where you simply show your documents.
  • Fuel is cheap — and often gas. Many Uzbek cars run on methane or propane, so you'll see plenty of gas stations alongside petrol; a rental is most likely petrol, which is inexpensive by European standards. There are no motorway tolls to worry about, but fill up before long rural stretches as stations thin out between towns.
  • Licence, permit and insurance. Bring your full driving licence plus an International Driving Permit, which is expected in Uzbekistan alongside your home licence and passport. Basic cover usually carries an excess you'd pay on any damage — you can reduce it at the time of booking, which is normally cheaper than the cover pushed at the desk. • Local tip: plan the long hauls. If you're continuing a Central Asia loop, a car gives you the same freedom you'd want in Bishkek or Almaty — but check your rental's cross-border rules before driving toward Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan, as not all agencies allow it.

Where to pick up a car in Tashkent

Most travellers collect at Tashkent International (TAS), though downtown offices and hotel delivery are widely offered by local agencies.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Tashkent?
For the city alone, not really — the metro, taxis and walkable centre cover it. But for day trips to the Chimgan mountains or a road trip down to Samarkand and Shahrisabz, a car earns its keep, reaching places trains and buses can't and letting you stop wherever you like.
What do I need to rent a car in Tashkent?
Your full driving licence, an International Driving Permit, your passport, and a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Most agencies set a minimum age of 21–25. It's worth confirming the IDP requirement with your provider before you fly. Compare providers and conditions here →
Which side of the road do they drive on in Uzbekistan?
On the right, overtaking on the left. City avenues in Tashkent are wide and reasonably orderly, but drivers can be assertive, so take it steady on your first day and stay alert at busy junctions and roundabouts.
Can I pick up a car at Tashkent airport (TAS)?
Yes. Several agencies serve Tashkent International, and many also offer downtown collection or delivery to your hotel. Confirm the exact desk location and staffing hours when you book, especially for late-night or early-morning flights.
Can I drive from Tashkent to Samarkand?
Absolutely — it's roughly 280 km down the M39, around four hours with stops, on a mostly good road. The Afrosiyob train is faster, but a car lets you detour to Shahrisabz over the Takhtakaracha Pass and travel on your own schedule.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Tashkent?
Tashkent is served mainly by local and regional Uzbek agencies rather than the large international chains familiar in Western Europe, so the exact line-up varies by your travel dates and pick-up point. We show the providers available for your trip side by side, so you can compare price, fleet and insurance excess before booking — with free cancellation if your plans change.
