What to know before you drive in Milos

  • Many roads are unpaved. Sealed roads connect the main villages and popular beaches. Remote coves — some of the best ones — are reached by dirt track. A standard small car handles most of them in summer; only deep sand or boulder tracks need a 4x4.
  • Book early. Milos has a limited car fleet. In peak season (mid-July to late August) it is common for every car on the island to be taken. Book at least two to three weeks ahead.
  • Fuel: one station in Adamas. Adamas, the main port, has the island's fuel. Fill up there — there are no stations elsewhere on the island.
  • Parking at Sarakiniko. The car park fills by 9 a.m. in high season. Go early or return in the evening for a completely different experience of the white rock formations.
  • Pick up in Adamas. Most rental offices are in the port of Adamas. Some will meet you at Milos Airport (MLO) if arranged in advance. Compare Milos prices here ↗

Is it worth renting a car in Milos?
Absolutely. The island has over 70 beaches and the bus serves only a fraction of them. Without a car you're confined to Adamas, Plaka and the handful of stops on the main route. A hire car is the single most useful thing you can book for a trip to Milos.
What do I need to rent a car in Milos?
A valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit hold, and generally to be 21 or over (surcharges commonly apply under 25 or 23 depending on the provider). International visitors should check whether their licence is accepted in Greece.
Do I need a 4x4 to reach the beaches in Milos?
For most beaches, no. Popular spots like Sarakiniko, Klima, Firiplaka and Provatas are reachable on paved or compacted dirt roads in a regular small car. A handful of the most remote coves have rougher tracks where a higher-clearance vehicle helps, but they're the exception.
When should I book a hire car in Milos?
As early as possible — ideally two to three weeks before arrival in July and August. Milos has a much smaller car fleet than larger Greek islands, and it sells out entirely during the peak weeks. Last-minute bookings in summer are very difficult.
Can I drive to the catacombs and archaeological sites in a hire car?
Yes. The Milos Catacombs near Trypiti and most of the island's archaeological sites are accessible by paved road and have small car parks. The ancient theatre above Klima and the site of the Venus de Milo discovery are both easy drives from anywhere on the island.
