Rent a Car in Bilbao

Central Bilbao, with the Guggenheim, the Old Town and the estuary, is easy on foot, by tram or by metro — a car adds little inside the city and much of the centre in fact restricts vehicle access. Bilbao, though, is the best gateway to the wider Basque Country, and that's where a car changes the whole trip.

The Basque coast — Getxo, Bermeo, Mundaka with its famous surf wave, and Gaztelugatxe — is under 40 minutes away via the BI-631 and N-637. Vitoria-Gasteiz, the regional capital and a very calm city, is 65 km south via the AP-68. Rioja Alavesa, with its wineries and villages like Laguardia, is just over an hour away, and San Sebastián to the east is about 100 km via the AP-8. All of this is doable by public transport, but with transfers and thinner schedules outside Bilbao itself; with your own car you can string together several stops in a single day.
