Why hire a car in Split

Split's Old City — Diocletian's Palace, still lived in after 1,700 years — is one of the most extraordinary urban sites in Europe, and it's entirely on foot. But Split is also the best-connected hub on the Dalmatian Coast, with ferry connections to Hvar, Brač, Vis and the outer islands, and a road network that links the coast to the interior parks and national parks of Dalmatia. A hire car collected at Split Airport or the city centre opens a region far beyond what any bus timetable or island ferry can reach.

Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia's most visited natural site, is a 2.5-hour drive north through the Dinaric highlands — an otherworldly landscape of turquoise terraced lakes and waterfalls. Krka National Park, with its famous Skradinski Buk waterfall and medieval Franciscan monastery on an island, is just 80 km north of Split. South along the coast, the Makarska Riviera has some of the finest pebble beaches on the Adriatic; Dubrovnik is 230 km further. The Pelješac Peninsula wine road — home to Dingač and Postup, Croatia's best reds — branches off the D8 just 100 km south. A hire car is the best investment you'll make for a Dalmatian trip.

What to know before you drive around Split

  • Collect at Split Airport (SPU). Hire desks are in the arrivals hall at SPU, about 24 km west of the city. The drive to central Split takes around 30 minutes on the A1 spur road. Compare Split car hire prices →
  • Croatia drives on the right. Speed limits: 130 km/h on motorways, 90 on main roads, 50 in towns. Drink-driving limits are strict (0.5 mg/ml; zero for under-24s and inexperienced drivers). Police checkpoints are common on main roads in summer.
  • Parking in Split. The old city centre has metered blue-zone parking (around €1.50–2/hour). The Sustipan promontory and the areas near the Green Market have more availability. For beach days, pay-and-display car parks are at all major beach spots.
  • Plitvice Lakes: book ahead. Plitvice Lakes National Park requires advance ticket booking in high season — entrance includes a specific time slot. Book online before driving the 2.5 hours north to ensure you get in.
  • Island access by ferry. Ferries to Hvar, Brač and Vis leave from the Split ferry port in the old city. Leave the hire car in the port car park and foot-passenger the ferries — island roads are small and car ferry queues can be very long in July and August.
  • Heading south to Dubrovnik? The D8 coast road and the A1/A6 motorway south connect Split to Dubrovnik in about 2.5–3 hours — one of Croatia's best road trips.

Where to collect your hire car in Split

Split Airport (SPU), 24 km west of the city, is the main pickup hub. City-centre offices near the ferry port suit those arriving by ferry or wanting to explore Split before collecting the car.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Split?
Yes — particularly for reaching Plitvice Lakes, Krka National Park, the Makarska Riviera and the Pelješac wine road. The coast road and interior of Dalmatia are poorly served by public transport. For the islands (Hvar, Brač, Vis), leave the car at the port and take the ferry on foot.
Where do I pick up a hire car in Split?
Split Airport (SPU), 24 km west of the city, is the main pickup point with all major brands in arrivals. City-centre offices near the ferry port and Bačvice beach are also available — useful if you want to explore Split first.
Can I take a hire car to the islands from Split?
Technically yes, by car ferry, but it's not recommended. Car ferry queues in July and August can be 3–5 hours long for Hvar and Brač. It's much better to park at Split's port car park and take the foot passenger ferry to the islands.
How far is Plitvice Lakes from Split?
About 240 km north via the A1 motorway, taking around 2.5 hours. It's a long day trip — leave Split by 7 a.m. to arrive for the morning opening, spend 4–5 hours at the park and return by early evening. Book tickets online in advance.
How far is Dubrovnik from Split?
About 230 km south via the D8 coast road (slower but scenic) or the A1/A6 motorway (faster, around 2.5 hours). The coastal route through Makarska and Ploče is one of Croatia's finest drives and adds only 30–40 minutes over the motorway.
Which car hire companies operate in Split?
Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget, Sixt and local Croatian agencies all operate at SPU. Local operators often offer better rates for longer coastal road trips and know the Dalmatian road conditions well. Compare all Split car hire prices →
