Why renting a car in the Canary Islands pays off

The Canary Islands are one of Europe's most popular year-round destinations — and on every single island, a hire car transforms the holiday. The resorts are designed for easy arrival, but the best the islands have to offer sits further away: the crater rim at El Teide, the sand sea at Maspalomas, the fire mountains of Timanfaya, the cloud forests of La Palma and the ancient dragon trees of La Gomera. Buses connect the main towns, but they stop well short of what makes each island memorable.

Each island has its own character. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are large and varied, with enough to fill two weeks. Lanzarote rewards slow driving through a volcanic landscape unlike anywhere else in Europe. Fuerteventura is flat and fast, ideal for beach-hopping. La Palma and La Gomera are green, steep and quiet. Wherever you fly into, a hire car is the most useful thing in your booking.

What to know before you drive in the Canary Islands

  • Drive on the right. All Canary Islands follow mainland Spanish driving rules — right-hand traffic, roundabout priority to vehicles already on the roundabout unless signed otherwise.
  • Cheaper fuel. The Canaries have a special tax regime that keeps petrol noticeably cheaper than on the Spanish mainland or northern Europe. Fill up rather than top up.
  • Island size varies widely. Tenerife and Gran Canaria have motorways; La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are all mountain roads. Match your car size to the island — a small car is easier on the winding northern routes.
  • Pick up at the airport. Every main island airport has rental desks on site. Book ahead in winter (northern Europeans in sun) and summer (Spanish domestic tourism) — both peak seasons see cars sell out fast.
  • Cars don't cross islands. Hire cars cannot be taken on inter-island ferries. If you're island-hopping, book a separate car on each island. Compare Canary Islands prices here ↗

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Which Canary Island is best for a hire car?
All of them benefit from one, but Tenerife and Gran Canaria offer the most variety — the contrast between the island's different landscapes makes driving genuinely rewarding. Lanzarote is compact and easy to drive, with a dramatic volcanic route through Timanfaya. La Palma has the most spectacular mountain roads if you enjoy driving as much as the destination.
What do I need to rent a car in the Canary Islands?
A valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit hold, and generally to be 21 or over (young-driver surcharges often apply under 25). Non-EU visitors should check whether their licence is accepted or whether an international driving permit is required.
Can I take a hire car between Canary Islands?
No. Rental agreements do not permit cars to be transported on inter-island ferries. If you plan to visit more than one island, you'll need to book a separate hire car on each island. The inter-island flights are short and cheap, making this straightforward.
When is the best time to hire a car in the Canary Islands?
The Canaries are a year-round destination with no true off-season. Cars are in highest demand in winter (December–February, northern European sun-seekers) and in July–August (Spanish domestic peak). Spring and autumn offer the best combination of good weather and car availability.
Is fuel expensive in the Canary Islands?
No — it's one of the cheapest places in Europe to fill up. The islands have a special fiscal regime that significantly reduces fuel duty compared to mainland Spain or the EU average. This makes longer driving days noticeably cheaper than at home.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Canary Islands?
We compare the big international names (Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, Budget) alongside trusted Canary Islands local firms such as trusted local agencies — over 1,000 providers in total. You see each price and book whichever suits you best, with free cancellation.
