What to know before you drive in Colombo

  • Drive on the left. Sri Lanka drives on the LEFT, with the steering wheel on the right. If you're used to right-hand traffic, take the first hour slowly, give way to traffic already on the roundabout, and let an attentive co-pilot help at junctions until it feels natural.
  • Airport pickup at CMB. Bandaranaike International is roughly 35 km north of central Colombo near Negombo, off the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway (E03). Picking the car up at the airport saves a transfer and lets you join the expressway network straight away; collecting in town instead is handy if you land late and want to settle in Fort or Galle Face first.
  • Roads and conditions. The Southern Expressway (E01) is a fast, well-surfaced toll motorway to Galle and the south coast, but ordinary A-roads like the Galle Road (A2) are a different world: narrow, busy, and shared with tuk-tuks, buses, scooters and the occasional stray dog. Plan shorter daily distances than the map suggests and avoid driving after dark on rural roads.
  • Fuel, tolls and parking. Petrol and diesel stations are plentiful in and around Colombo; the expressways charge tolls paid in cash at the booth. Keep small rupee notes handy and confirm whether your car takes petrol or diesel when you collect it.
