Why hire a car in Colombo

Colombo is Sri Lanka's commercial capital and the natural base for exploring the island's west and south coasts. Having your own car turns a string of awkward connections into a single flexible day: you can be at Galle Fort in well under two hours on the Southern Expressway (E01), reach the beaches at Bentota and Mirissa without changing trains, or head inland towards Kandy and the hill country whenever you like. Public transport exists, but buses are crowded and slow, the scenic coastal and Kandy trains sell out, and tuk-tuks are best kept for short hops around Fort, Pettah and Galle Face rather than long touring legs.

A hire car also solves the airport problem. Bandaranaike International (CMB) sits about 35 km north of the city near Negombo, and a car waiting at arrivals beats haggling for a transfer after a long flight. Whether you want true self-drive freedom or a car with a local driver to handle the busy A-roads while you watch the coast roll by, booking a Colombo car hire in advance locks in your vehicle and your price before you land.

What to know before you drive in Colombo

  • Drive on the left. Sri Lanka drives on the LEFT, with the steering wheel on the right. If you're used to right-hand traffic, take the first hour slowly, give way to traffic already on the roundabout, and let an attentive co-pilot help at junctions until it feels natural.
  • Airport pickup at CMB. Bandaranaike International is roughly 35 km north of central Colombo near Negombo, off the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway (E03). Picking the car up at the airport saves a transfer and lets you join the expressway network straight away; collecting in town instead is handy if you land late and want to settle in Fort or Galle Face first.
  • Roads and conditions. The Southern Expressway (E01) is a fast, well-surfaced toll motorway to Galle and the south coast, but ordinary A-roads like the Galle Road (A2) are a different world: narrow, busy, and shared with tuk-tuks, buses, scooters and the occasional stray dog. Plan shorter daily distances than the map suggests and avoid driving after dark on rural roads.
  • Fuel, tolls and parking. Petrol and diesel stations are plentiful in and around Colombo; the expressways charge tolls paid in cash at the booth. Keep small rupee notes handy and confirm whether your car takes petrol or diesel when you collect it.
  • Permit, licence and insurance. To self-drive in Sri Lanka you'll need a recognised permit (typically a local Recognition Permit issued against an International Driving Permit) — your home licence alone usually isn't enough, so check the requirement before you travel. Always review the insurance excess and what's covered, and consider reducing it. Compare Colombo car hire prices →
  • Local tip — consider a driver. Many visitors hire a car with a chauffeur for touring Sri Lanka. It costs more than self-drive but removes the stress of left-hand traffic on the A2 and unfamiliar village roads, and a good driver doubles as a guide. Compare both options and pick what suits your trip.

Where to pick up your car in Colombo

Most travellers collect at Bandaranaike Airport (CMB) near Negombo, while city pickups around Colombo Fort, Galle Face and along Galle Road suit those staying a night before heading off down the coast.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Colombo?
Yes, if you plan to explore beyond the city. A car makes day trips to Galle, the south-coast beaches at Bentota and Mirissa, or Kandy far easier than buses and trains, and gives you flexibility the public network can't. For sightseeing within central Colombo alone — Fort, Pettah and Galle Face — a tuk-tuk is often simpler.
What do I need to rent and drive a car in Sri Lanka?
You'll typically need a valid driving licence plus a recognised permit to drive legally in Sri Lanka — usually a local Recognition Permit issued against an International Driving Permit, as your home licence on its own isn't sufficient. Arrange this before you travel. You'll also need a credit card and to meet the minimum age set by the rental provider.
Which side of the road do they drive on in Colombo?
Sri Lanka drives on the LEFT, with right-hand-drive cars. Roads like the Galle Road (A2) are busy and shared with tuk-tuks, buses and scooters, so take the first stretch slowly. If left-hand traffic feels daunting, hiring a car with a driver is a popular and stress-free alternative.
Can I pick up a hire car at Bandaranaike Airport (CMB)?
Yes. Bandaranaike International (CMB) is about 35 km north of Colombo near Negombo, and airport pickup means your car is ready at arrivals with quick access to the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway (E03). You can compare Colombo airport car hire deals here →.
What about insurance and the excess?
Rentals come with basic cover, but the excess (the amount you'd pay towards any damage) can be high. Always check what's included and consider reducing the excess so a minor scrape on a narrow Colombo back street doesn't ruin your trip. Compare the cover, not just the headline price.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Colombo?
You can compare established Sri Lankan agencies such as Malkey Rent A Car and Casons Rent A Car, both long-running Colombo-based operators. We show self-drive and chauffeur-driven options together, so you can sort by price, cover and vehicle type and book the one that suits you.
