Why hire a car in Rome

Rome is one of the rare cities where a car is not just unnecessary but actively unhelpful — the historic centre is full of ZTL restricted zones, cameras that will send a fine to your home address weeks later, and cobblestone streets where a wing mirror disappears in a gap you thought was fine. The Colosseum, the Forum, Vatican City, Trastevere and the Borghese Gallery are all connected by metro, bus and the city's surprisingly good tram network. Collect your hire car only when you're leaving.

But as a base for central Italy, Rome is superb. Tuscany is 2.5 hours north via the A1 Autostrada — the Chianti wine road between Florence and Siena is one of Europe's great drives, and hill towns like Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano are all within a day's circuit of Rome. The Amalfi Coast is 3 hours south via the A1 and A3 motorways, with Pompeii a natural stop en route to Naples. The Umbrian hill towns of Assisi, Perugia and Orvieto sit between Rome and Florence and are ideal for a night or two off the motorway. Fiumicino Airport is 32 km west of the city and the natural collection point for any Italian road trip starting in Rome.

What to know before you drive around Rome

  • Strictly avoid the ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato). The ZTL covers Rome's entire historic centre and is monitored by cameras 24/7. Hire car plates are automatically logged and fines (€80–160+) are sent to the hire agency and charged to your card weeks later. Do not enter the ZTL in a hire car under any circumstances. • Collect at Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA). FCO, 32 km west of the city, is Rome's main international hub with all major hire brands. CIA, 15 km south-east, is used by budget airlines and has smaller hire desks. Both connect to the city by rail.
  • Italy drives on the right. Speed limits: 130 km/h on motorways (110 in rain), 90 on secondary roads, 50 in towns. Fixed cameras are common on the A1 (Autostrada del Sole).
  • Autostrada tolls. Italy's motorway network is tolled. Rome to Florence (A1) costs around €15; Rome to Naples around €12. Most cars accept cash and card at booths. A Telepass transponder (requested from the agency) speeds up toll payment.
  • Parking in historic towns. Tuscany's hill towns have blue-line paid parking at their entrances and free white-line parking further out. Arrive early in summer — Pienza, San Gimignano and Civita di Bagnoregio fill before noon in July and August.
  • Sicily and the south. From Rome, Palermo and Sicily are reachable by driving or via a car ferry from Naples — a natural extension of a longer Italian road trip.

Where to collect your hire car near Rome

Most road trippers pick up at Fiumicino Airport (FCO), 32 km west of the historic centre with all major brands. Ciampino (CIA), 15 km south-east, suits budget airline arrivals. Avoid driving into the ZTL historic centre.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Should I hire a car for central Rome?
No — avoid driving in the historic centre entirely. The ZTL restricted zone covers the whole old city and cameras automatically fine hire car plates. Use public transport within Rome and only collect the car when you're leaving the city for day trips or onward travel.
Where do I pick up a hire car near Rome?
Fiumicino International Airport (FCO), 32 km west of the city, has all major hire brands and is the best option for travellers starting a road trip. Ciampino (CIA) is cheaper for some budget airlines but has fewer hire options. City-centre offices near Termini station also exist.
What is the ZTL and how do I avoid it?
The ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) is Rome's traffic restriction zone covering the entire historic centre. Entry is monitored by cameras at all entry points. Fines for hire cars are charged to the agency and forwarded to your credit card — typically €80–160 plus the agency's admin fee. Avoid the ZTL completely.
How far is Tuscany from Rome?
Florence is about 270 km north via the A1, taking around 2.5–3 hours. The Chianti wine road between Florence and Siena is an additional 65 km and one of Italy's finest drives. Orvieto, a natural first stop on the way north, is just 120 km from Rome.
Are there tolls on Italian motorways?
Yes — most major Italian motorways are tolled. Rome to Florence costs around €15; Rome to Naples around €12. Cash and card are accepted at booths. A Telepass transponder can be requested from some hire agencies for easier toll payment.
Which car hire companies operate in Rome?
Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, Budget, Sixt and Italian agencies including Maggiore all operate at FCO and CIA. Competition is strong and advance booking consistently delivers the best rates. Compare all Rome car hire prices →
