Compare car hire providers in Tivat

Tivat is a smaller, seasonal market, so you won't find every global brand at the airport. We compare the international names that do operate here alongside established Montenegrin agencies, so you can see who's actually available at Tivat Airport (TIV) and book the best price — all with free cancellation.

Why renting a car in Tivat pays off

Tivat is the front door to the Montenegrin coast. Its airport (TIV) is the busiest summer gateway on the Bay of Kotor, and most people land here for a beach holiday rather than for Tivat itself. The town has the glossy Porto Montenegro marina and a pleasant seafront promenade, but the real draw is everything within easy reach: Kotor and its walled old town sit about 8 km round the bay, Perast and its two island churches are a short drive further on, and Budva's beaches and nightlife are roughly half an hour south over the Vrmac ridge.

Public transport here is thin. Buses link the main coastal towns, but they don't run to the quiet coves of the Luštica peninsula, the viewpoint at the top of the Kotor–Lovćen serpentines, or the beaches at Žanjic and Plavi Horizonti. Taxis add up fast over a week. With your own car you can chase a swim in the morning, lunch in Perast and watch the sunset in Budva — and reach the corners of the bay that no timetable bothers with. For a week's stay, car hire almost always works out cheaper and freer than chaining together taxis and day tours.

What to know before you drive in Tivat

  • You drive on the right. Montenegro uses right-hand traffic, so if you're coming from the UK or Ireland, take your first roundabout slowly and remember the bulk of the car now sits on your left. An automatic makes the switch easier on the bay's tight, winding roads — but book one early, because cheap automatics are limited and sell out in summer.
  • Pickup is almost always at the airport. Tivat Airport (TIV) is the main collection point, with desks a short walk from arrivals; some firms also deliver to Porto Montenegro or your hotel in Tivat. Choose your pickup point carefully at booking and allow extra time in peak season, when summer charter flights cluster and the small single-runway terminal gets busy. Compare Tivat car hire prices here →
  • The roads are scenic but narrow. The coast road hugging the bay is beautiful but tight and slow in July and August, and the climb up the Kotor–Lovćen serpentines demands patience and low gears. To skip the long loop around the head of the bay, take the Lepetane–Kamenari ferry across the Verige strait — and never rush a blind bend.
  • Fuel is easy; watch the Sozina tunnel toll. Petrol stations are plentiful along the coast and prices are reasonable. There are no toll roads on the bay itself, but if you head inland toward Podgorica via the Sozina tunnel there's a small toll, payable in cash or by card.
  • Licence, age and excess. A full UK or EU photocard licence is fine for short tourist stays — no International Driving Permit needed (non-EU visitors should check their own). Bring your passport and a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Basic cover (CDW) still leaves you liable for an excess on any damage, so reduce it to zero at booking rather than paying the higher rates pushed at the desk.
  • Local tip: base yourself in Tivat or nearby Kotor and drive the bay clockwise early in the day — you'll beat the cruise-ship crowds in Kotor's old town and have the Perast waterfront almost to yourself.

Where to pick up your car in Tivat

Most visitors collect their car straight from Tivat Airport (TIV), with a handful of providers also offering delivery to Porto Montenegro and the Tivat town centre.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Tivat?
For a holiday on the Bay of Kotor, yes. Tivat itself is walkable, but Kotor, Perast, Budva and the Luštica beaches are poorly linked by bus and taxis soon add up. A car lets you mix beach mornings with bay drives and reach the quiet coves no tour bothers with — usually cheaper than a week of taxis.
Where do I pick up my hire car in Tivat?
Almost everyone collects at Tivat Airport (TIV), where the rental desks are a short walk from arrivals. Some firms also deliver to Porto Montenegro or your hotel — just set your pickup point when you book. Compare Tivat Airport car hire here →
Which side of the road do you drive on in Montenegro?
On the right. If you're used to driving on the left, take your first junctions and roundabouts slowly. The coast roads around the bay are scenic but narrow and busy in summer, and the mountain serpentines towards Kotor and Lovćen need patience, so an automatic can make the trip far less stressful.
What do I need to rent a car in Tivat?
A full driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, your passport for ID, and usually to be 21 or over (with a young-driver surcharge under 25). A UK or EU licence is fine for short stays — no International Driving Permit needed, though non-EU visitors should check their own licence rules.
What does the insurance cover and should I worry about the excess?
Basic cover (CDW) handles collision and theft but leaves you liable for an excess on any damage — and the bay's narrow lanes and tight car parks cause plenty of scrapes. Reduce the excess to zero at booking, which is usually cheaper than the cover sold at the desk, or check whether your credit card already covers car hire.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Tivat?
Rather than assume every global brand is present, we show you who actually operates at Tivat Airport (TIV) — the international names that do serve the bay alongside trusted local Montenegrin agencies. You compare the real options side by side and book whichever suits you best, with free cancellation and pay at pickup.
