Why hire a car in Istanbul

Istanbul is a city that defeats most visitors with its traffic — the congestion on the Bosphorus bridges can stretch to hours at rush hour, and finding parking in the historic centre is a study in patience. But there are good reasons to hire a car here. The Bosphorus shoreline road from Üsküdar to Anadolu Kavağı on the Asian side is one of the great waterside drives in the world, passing Ottoman palaces, wooden yalı mansions and fish restaurants all the way to the Black Sea. Thrace — the European hinterland north of the city — is wine country, and the ancient city of Edirne with its magnificent Selimiye Mosque is 240 km away on a fast, uncrowded motorway.

The most practical use of a hire car in Istanbul is as a tool for escaping the city efficiently. Ferries to the Princes Islands leave from Eminönü and Kabataş — a hired car can drop you there and pick you up. The Belgrad Forest north of the city is a green escape within an hour. And for travellers continuing to Ankara, Cappadocia or the Aegean coast, collecting a hire car in Istanbul and doing a one-way drop is often the most flexible start to a Turkish road trip.

What to know before you drive in Istanbul

  • Avoid driving in the historic centre. Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu and Galata are densely packed, full of one-way streets and have almost no parking. Use public transport (tram, metro, ferry) within the city and collect the car when you're leaving.
  • Two airports — choose carefully. Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side, 35–45 km from the centre. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side, 45 km from the centre. Pick the airport that matches your onward direction — IST for Thrace and Edirne, SAW for Anatolia and the Aegean. Compare Istanbul car hire prices →
  • The Bosphorus bridges have tolls. The Fatih Sultan Mehmet (FSM) and Yavuz Sultan Selim bridges use the HGS electronic toll system. Most Turkish hire cars include a HGS tag — confirm with the agency. Without one, you'll need to top up at a PTT post office or petrol station before using the bridges.
  • Traffic timing is everything. Rush hours (7–9:30 a.m. and 5–8 p.m.) turn a 20-minute drive into 90 minutes. For airport pickups and Bosphorus drives, avoid these windows entirely.
  • Speed limits and cameras. Turkey drives on the right: 120 km/h on motorways, 90 on main roads, 50 in town. Speed cameras are widespread in Istanbul — fixed cameras on bridges and main arteries, and mobile police units.
  • Heading further? Istanbul is the natural start of a Turkish road trip south via Antalya on the coast or east to Cappadocia.

Where to collect your hire car in Istanbul

Choose between Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side (35 km from centre) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side (45 km from centre) — pick whichever matches your onward direction.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Istanbul?
For exploring the city itself — no. Public transport is excellent and traffic is brutal. A hire car makes sense for: day trips to the Bosphorus Asian shore and Black Sea coast, the drive to Edirne, or as the start of a Turkish road trip south or east.
Which Istanbul airport should I pick up at?
Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side suits travellers heading to Thrace, Edirne or Bulgaria. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side is better for those heading to Ankara, Cappadocia or the Aegean coast. Both are around 35–45 km from the city centre.
Do hire cars in Istanbul include a Bosphorus bridge toll tag?
Most do — Turkish hire agencies generally include an HGS electronic tag for the bridge tolls. Confirm when booking. If your car doesn't have one, you can top up the HGS system at PTT post offices or petrol stations before crossing.
Can I do a one-way rental from Istanbul?
Yes — one-way rentals between Istanbul and major Turkish cities (Ankara, Izmir, Antalya) are offered by most international agencies. One-way fees apply and vary; booking in advance usually gets a better rate.
How far is Edirne from Istanbul?
About 240 km north-west via the TEM motorway, taking around 2.5–3 hours. Edirne's Selimiye Mosque — Sinan's masterpiece — is considered one of the finest Ottoman buildings in the world. It's a natural long day trip or an overnight stop on the way to Bulgaria.
Which car hire companies operate in Istanbul?
Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget, Sixt and Enterprise all operate at IST and SAW. Local Turkish agencies — including Budget's Turkish franchise and local operators — often offer better rates, especially for longer road trips. Compare all Istanbul car hire prices →
