Rent a Car in Fort Myers

Southwest Florida is built around barrier islands and coastal communities strung along the Gulf, and none of them are connected by any meaningful public transit. Sanibel and Captiva, joined to the mainland by a causeway, are about 30–40 minutes from the airport; Fort Myers Beach is even closer. A hire car is simply how visitors here get from their hotel to the beach, from beach to beach, and out to dinner in the evening.

Fort Myers is also well positioned for wider exploration. Naples and its upscale shopping district are about 45 minutes south, and the Everglades' western entrances are roughly an hour south-east — both realistic day trips. For anyone splitting a trip between the beaches and the Everglades, or combining Fort Myers with a longer Gulf Coast drive up to Sarasota and Tampa, a hire car makes the whole itinerary possible.
