What to know before you drive around Antalya

Collect at Antalya Airport (AYT). One of Turkey's busiest airports, AYT has hire desks in both the international and domestic terminals. The airport is about 13 km east of the city centre. Compare Antalya car hire prices →
Drive on the right. Turkey drives on the right-hand side of the road with left-hand-drive cars. Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 90 on main roads and 50 in urban areas. Speed cameras and police radar are common, particularly on the D400.
The D400 is spectacular but sometimes slow. The coastal road west toward Kaş is one of the most scenic drives in Turkey — and also one of the busiest in July and August. Narrow sections around Olimpos and the Göynük canyon require care. Allow extra time and pull over at viewpoints rather than stopping on bends.
Choose the right car. A compact or mid-size car is fine for the main coastal roads and resort transfers. If you're heading into the Taurus Mountains or the dirt track down to secluded beaches, an SUV with ground clearance is worth the extra cost.
Petrol stations thin out on mountain routes. Fuel up before the Taurus climb toward Pamukkale — stations are sparse on the secondary mountain roads. Major roads and resorts are well served.
Cross-border note. Taking a Turkish hire car into Greece or across other borders is rarely permitted. Check your policy before planning island hops from Kaş to Meis.
