Rent a Car in San Diego

San Diego's trolley covers downtown and a few corridors reasonably well, but the city's real appeal — La Jolla's coastline, Coronado's beaches, the craft brewery scene scattered across North Park and Miramar, Balboa Park's museums — is spread across a large, low-density area that transit doesn't connect efficiently. A hire car is the standard way to string together a beach day, a Balboa Park visit and dinner in a different neighbourhood.

San Diego is also uniquely positioned right at the US–Mexico border, with Tijuana a short drive south (check your hire agreement's cross-border policy before attempting this — many prohibit it). Within California, Joshua Tree National Park and the Anza-Borrego Desert are both around two hours east, and Los Angeles is about two hours north, making San Diego a strong base for a wider Southern California road trip.
