Why hire a car in Florence

Florence's historic centre — the Duomo, the Uffizi, the Ponte Vecchio, the Oltrarno — is small, dense and entirely walkable, and much of it is closed to unauthorised traffic anyway. A car adds nothing here and, given the narrow medieval streets and camera-enforced restricted zones, actively gets in the way. The reason to hire a car in Florence is Tuscany itself: Chianti's vineyard roads start less than 30 minutes south, Siena's medieval core is about an hour away, and San Gimignano's towers are roughly an hour and 15 minutes west, none of which are well served by direct public transport if you want to see more than one town in a day.

Further out, the Val d'Orcia — Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino — is about 1.5 to 2 hours south and rewards a full day or an overnight stay among its rolling hills and wine estates. Pisa's Leaning Tower is a quick hour west, and Lucca, with its intact Renaissance walls, sits just beyond it. For a longer trip, Cinque Terre is reachable in around 2 hours northwest, though parking there is scarce and best handled by leaving the car in La Spezia and taking the local train.

What to know before you drive in Florence

  • Collect at Peretola / Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR). The airport sits about 5 km northwest of the centre, with major agency desks in the arrivals area. Compare Florence car hire prices →
  • The historic centre is a ZTL — don't drive in. Florence's centro storico is a camera-enforced limited traffic zone; entering without authorisation results in a fine by post, even if you're just passing through or dropping off luggage. Park at a peripheral garage or your hotel's designated area and walk in.
  • Chianti's roads are scenic but narrow and slow. The SR222 "Chiantigiana" winds through vineyards and hill towns — budget more time than a map suggests, especially with tasting stops.
  • Parking in hill towns is outside the walls. Siena, San Gimignano and Montepulciano all restrict cars from their historic centres; park in the signposted lots just outside and walk in, which is usually only a few minutes anyway.
  • Heading further? The A1 south leads to Rome in under 2.5 hours, and the coast road west reaches Pisa in about an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Do I need a hire car in Florence?
Not for the city itself — the historic centre is compact, walkable and largely closed to cars anyway. A hire car becomes valuable once you want to explore Chianti, Siena, San Gimignano or the Val d'Orcia, none of which are efficient to combine by public transport in a single day.
Where do I collect my hire car in Florence?
Peretola / Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR), about 5 km northwest of the centre, has desks for all the major agencies in the arrivals area. It's the standard pickup point for visitors flying in or renting for a Tuscany road trip.
Can I drive into Florence's city centre?
No, not without authorisation. The centro storico is a camera-monitored ZTL (limited traffic zone), and unauthorised entry results in an automatic fine by post. Park outside the zone, typically at a garage near the station or your hotel's arranged parking, and walk in.
How far is Chianti from Florence?
The vineyard roads start less than 30 minutes south of the city on the SR222. A full loop through Greve, Panzano and Radda comfortably fills a day, especially with winery stops.
Can I visit Siena and San Gimignano in one day from Florence?
Yes, though it's a full day by car — Siena is about an hour away and San Gimignano roughly an hour further, so plan on driving between them directly rather than looping back through Florence.
Which car hire companies operate in Florence?
Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget and Sixt all have desks at Peretola Airport, alongside Italian agencies that are often more flexible on one-way rentals toward Rome or Pisa. Compare all Florence car hire prices →
