Why renting a car in Gran Canaria pays off

Gran Canaria is called the continent in miniature — and the name earns its keep. Drive 30 minutes inland from the southern resorts and the desert dunes of Maspalomas give way to pine forests and cloud-capped peaks. Another 20 minutes and you're in the whitewashed mountain village of Tejeda, looking out over a landscape that has nothing in common with the beach you left behind. The north coast is lush and Atlantic-facing; the west has dramatic sea cliffs; the east has the capital, Las Palmas, with a genuine old town and a long city beach.

The island's bus network, Global, is reasonable between the main towns but leaves the interior largely uncovered. With a hire car you can reach the Roque Nublo at sunrise, spend the morning in the pine forest above Maspalomas and be in Puerto de Mogán for lunch — all impossible by public transport. Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) sits just outside Las Palmas, 45 minutes from the south coast resorts by motorway.

What to know before you drive in Gran Canaria

  • GC-1 motorway connects south to north. The main motorway runs from Maspalomas to Las Palmas along the east coast and is fast and free. From it, secondary roads fan into the interior — these are where the island reveals itself.
  • Mountain roads are slow but spectacular. The GC-60 and GC-15 into the central massif are winding two-lane roads through dramatic scenery. They are fully paved and manageable in any standard car — just allow time.
  • Cheaper fuel. Like all Canary Islands, Gran Canaria benefits from a special tax regime that keeps petrol well below mainland Spanish prices.
  • Parking in Las Palmas. The Vegueta old quarter has limited street parking. Use the paid car parks near the cathedral or the port and walk the historic centre on foot.
  • Book ahead in winter. Gran Canaria is one of Europe's busiest winter-sun destinations (December–February). Rental cars sell out early — book as soon as your flights are confirmed. Compare Gran Canaria prices here ↗

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Gran Canaria?
Yes, especially if you're staying in the south. The resorts of Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico are well served within themselves, but the island's real variety — the mountains, the north coast, Las Palmas and the western sea cliffs — is car territory. Even two or three days with a hire car changes the trip significantly.
What do I need to rent a car in Gran Canaria?
A valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit hold, and generally to be 21 or over (young-driver surcharges often apply under 25). Non-EU visitors should check whether their licence is accepted in Spain or whether an international driving permit is required.
Where is Gran Canaria Airport and how far is it from the resorts?
Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is on the east coast, close to Las Palmas. It's about 45–50 minutes by motorway from Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés in the south, and 15 minutes from Las Palmas city. All major rental companies have desks at the terminal.
Can I drive to the Maspalomas dunes in a hire car?
Yes. The dunes themselves are a nature reserve on foot, but you can drive to the Faro de Maspalomas car park at the southern tip or to the beach access points along the front. The area around Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés is easy to navigate by car.
How long does it take to drive across Gran Canaria?
North to south (Las Palmas to Maspalomas) via the GC-1 motorway takes about 45 minutes without stops. The same route through the interior — via Tejeda and Roque Nublo — takes 90 minutes to two hours but is one of the best drives in the Canary Islands.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Gran Canaria?
We compare the big international names (Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, Budget) alongside trusted Gran Canaria local firms such as trusted local agencies — over 1,000 providers in total. You see each price and book whichever suits you best, with free cancellation.
