Car Rental in Mallorca: Complete Guide 2026

Everything you need to know to rent a car in Mallorca. Prices, pickup locations, what insurance to get and how to get around the island without surprises.

Mallorca is the Spanish island where renting a car isn’t a luxury — it’s almost a necessity. Public transport covers the main towns, but if you want to get lost in the Serra de Tramuntana, reach the northern coves before they fill up, or explore inland villages at your own pace, you need a car. This guide covers everything you need to book smart.

Is it worth renting a car in Mallorca?

Yes, especially if:

  • You’re staying more than 3 days
  • You want to see more than Palma and El Arenal
  • You’re travelling as a family or with large bags
  • You plan to visit coves not served by bus

Mallorca’s bus network (TIB) connects Palma well with Alcúdia, Porto Cristo and Llucmajor, but for northern coves like Cala Tuent, Cala Deià or Sa Calobra, a car is practically essential.

Where to pick up: airport vs. Palma city centre

Palma Airport (PMI) is the most convenient option if you’re flying in. All major companies have a desk there. The downside: they charge an airport concession fee that can add €8–15/day.

Palma city centre is 10–20% cheaper. If you’re travelling light, a taxi or bus from the airport + picking up the car the next day in the centre is a valid strategy for longer trips.

What insurance to get

Insurance is the number-one source of nasty surprises in car rentals. The basics:

  • CDW (Collision Damage Waiver): covers damage to the car, always with an excess. In Mallorca this is typically €800–2,000.
  • SCDW or Full Coverage: reduces the excess to zero. Adds around €10–20/day.
  • Your credit card: many Visa or Mastercard Gold cards cover the rental excess. Check the terms before you travel — it could save you the SCDW cost.

Practical tip: if you have a credit card with verified rental cover, basic CDW is enough. If not, take SCDW or buy third-party insurance (usually cheaper than the rental company’s).

Must-do driving routes in Mallorca

The Serra de Tramuntana

The Serra road is one of the most spectacular in Europe. The stretch from Sóller to Pollença on the Ma-10 is unmissable. Don’t miss:

  • Mirador de ses Barques (between Sóller and Port de Sóller)
  • Cala Tuent — down an unpaved track, one car wide, but worth every metre
  • Sa Calobra — 12 km of hairpin bends to reach the Torrent de Pareis; go in the morning before the coach buses arrive

The northern coves

Alcúdia, Pollença, Formentor. This area has the best uncrowded beaches on the island. Playa de Formentor can only be reached by car on weekdays (in summer there are access restrictions and a shuttle bus from Port de Pollença).

The Llevant

Artà, Capdepera, Cala Ratjada. Less touristy than the southwest, with the Parc Natural de la Península de Llevant and some of the island’s best rocky coves.

Practical tips

Parking in Palma. The old town has plenty of paid zones. Use the Estació Intermodal car park or Sa Riera — both are cheap and well-placed.

Petrol stations. Fill up when you collect the car if you’re on a “return full” rate. Petrol stations in the northern coves are scarce; fill up in Alcúdia or Pollença before heading into the Serra.

Parking insurance. Cove and viewpoint car parks in the Serra are busy and tight. Minor scrapes are the most common damage — make sure your excess is covered.

GPS or data. Download Mallorca’s offline maps in Google Maps before you go. Coverage in the Serra and some coves is patchy.

When is the best time to rent

  • May and June: the best time. Perfect weather, reasonable prices, no crowds.
  • July and August: very expensive and busy. Book 6+ weeks ahead if you’re going in summer.
  • September and October: excellent option. The sea is still warm and prices drop.
  • Winter: very low prices, but many beach restaurants and hotels close.
