Can You Take a Rental Car from Mallorca to Menorca?
Most Mallorca rental companies prohibit inter-island crossings. Here's which routes exist, why most companies say no, and the practical alternative that actually works.
Taking a rental car from Mallorca to Menorca by ferry is technically possible — ferries on both main routes carry vehicles. The problem is that most rental companies based in Mallorca prohibit the crossing in their contracts. This guide explains the routes, the restrictions, and the straightforward workaround.
The two ferry routes
Alcudia → Ciutadella (north route)
- Operator: Baleàlia, Trasmapi
- Crossing time: approximately 2.5 hours
- Departure point: Port d’Alcúdia, northern Mallorca
- Arrival: Ciutadella, western Menorca
- Frequency: multiple daily departures in summer, reduced in winter
- Car deck: yes, vehicles carried
Palma → Mahón (south route)
- Operator: Trasmediterránea / Balearia
- Crossing time: approximately 5–6 hours (overnight option available)
- Departure point: Port of Palma
- Arrival: Mahón (Maó), eastern Menorca
- Frequency: less frequent than the Alcudia route
- Car deck: yes, vehicles carried
The Alcudia–Ciutadella route is the most popular for car transport: shorter crossing, more departures, and the northern approach gives you more of Menorca’s interior.
Why most Mallorca rental companies say no
Rental contracts in the Balearic Islands typically define the operating territory as the specific island where you rented. Taking the car to another island is considered a territory change, which creates:
- A different jurisdiction if an accident occurs
- Uncertainty about whether the company’s insurance applies
- Logistical issues if the car breaks down and needs roadside assistance from a mainland operator
Most international chains (Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Sixt) and many local Mallorca agencies explicitly prohibit inter-island crossings in their contracts. Some will add a surcharge and provide written permission if you ask in advance, but this is the exception.
How to check your specific rental
Before booking, ask: “Does the contract allow me to take the car on a ferry to Menorca?”
If yes: get written confirmation specifying the route, dates, and destination island.
If no: don’t attempt it. The Balearic Islands are close together and ferry crossings feel minor — but voiding your insurance on an inter-island crossing is a real risk. Any damage during transit or on Menorca will not be covered.
The practical alternative: rent separately on Menorca
The most reliable approach if you need a car on both islands:
- Return your Mallorca rental at Palma Airport or Mahón port before boarding
- Pick up a separate rental at Menorca Airport (MAH) or Mahón city
Menorca Airport (MAH) has all major rental desks. The island is small — 48 km east to west — so daily prices tend to be lower than Mallorca in shoulder season. Renting locally means no ferry restrictions, full insurance coverage, and a fresh car.
If you’re only spending 1–2 days on Menorca, taxis and local buses (TMSA network) cover the main towns and some beaches. A rental car adds value for reaching Cala Macarella, Cala Pregonda, or the northern coast — all require a car or bike.
Booking the ferry crossing (foot passenger only)
If you decide to cross as a foot passenger and rent on arrival:
- Book via Balearia or Trasmediterránea websites
- Alcudia–Ciutadella: from €25–40 one-way in shoulder season, €50–70 in August
- The port of Alcúdia has a car park for leaving your Mallorca rental before boarding
Summer booking warning
July–August car deck spaces on the Alcudia–Ciutadella route sell out fast — sometimes weeks ahead. If you are determined to take a Mallorca rental (having confirmed permission), book the car deck space immediately after securing the rental. Don’t leave it to the day before.
Practical tips
Alcudia port logistics: The ferry terminal is at the commercial port on the north side of the bay. GPS “Port d’Alcúdia Ferry Terminal.” Parking adjacent to the terminal is paid (€6–10/day).
Document check: Even if your rental company permits the crossing, carry the written authorisation plus a copy of your rental contract at the Menorca end. If pulled over, police may question whose car it is.
Return logistics: One-way rental from Menorca back to Mallorca airport is sometimes possible but involves an additional drop fee. Confirm at booking.
