Why hiring a car in Sarajevo is worth it

Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the natural gateway to the rest of the country, but its real rewards sit out on the open road. The old Ottoman bazaar of Baščaršija and the war-history memorials around the city are walkable, yet the moment you want to reach the Drina valley and Višegrad to the east, or the mountains of Jahorina and Bjelašnica to the south, the timetables thin out fast. Buses connect the bigger towns, but they run on their own schedule and skip the villages and viewpoints in between.

The classic drive is the M17 south through the Neretva canyon to Mostar, around 130 km of dramatic river gorge and old stone bridges that no day-tour does justice to. With your own car you stop where you like — a roadside trout restaurant near Konjic, a ski village out of season, a quiet stretch of the Drina. For anything beyond a couple of days in the city, car hire almost always works out cheaper and far more flexible than chaining together organised excursions.

What to know before you drive in Sarajevo

  • You drive on the right. Traffic in Bosnia and Herzegovina keeps to the right and overtakes on the left. If you're coming from the UK or Ireland, take your first junctions and roundabouts slowly — the bulk of the car now sits on your left. Dipped headlights are required day and night, so leave them on.
  • Pickup is easy at the airport or in town. Most visitors collect at Sarajevo International (SJJ), a small, manageable airport just southwest of the centre near Ilidža, where the desks sit a short walk from arrivals. You can also pick up downtown if you'd rather explore Baščaršija on foot first and grab the car when you head out of the city. Compare Sarajevo car hire prices →
  • The roads are a real mix. The A1 motorway running north toward Zenica and the main M17 toward Mostar are good, but plenty of routes into the mountains and east toward Višegrad are older, winding two-lane roads. Allow more time than the distance suggests, watch for slow trucks on the climbs around Ivan Saddle, and take it gently in winter when ice and snow reach the higher passes around Jahorina and Bjelašnica.
  • Fuel and tolls. Petrol stations are common along the M17 and the A1 but sparser on the mountain back roads toward the Drina, so fill up before a long leg. The A1 motorway is tolled — keep some local currency (convertible marka, BAM) or a card handy for the booths.
  • Licence, permits and insurance. A UK or EU photocard licence is accepted for short tourist stays; if your licence isn't in the Latin alphabet, carry an International Driving Permit alongside it. Bring your passport and a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Basic cover (CDW) leaves you liable for an excess on any damage — cutting it to zero at booking is usually cheaper than the cover sold at the desk.
  • Crossing into Croatia or Montenegro. If you plan to drive on to the coast or continue our Mostar route and over a border, tell the rental company in advance — you'll often need a Green Card document and sometimes written permission for cross-border travel, and not every car is cleared to leave Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Where to pick up your car in Sarajevo

Most travellers collect at Sarajevo International (SJJ) near Ilidža, while downtown desks suit anyone exploring Baščaršija on foot first.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Sarajevo?
For anything beyond a day or two, yes. The city centre is walkable, but the best of the country — the M17 to Mostar, the Drina valley and Višegrad, the Jahorina and Bjelašnica mountains — is poorly served by public transport. A car lets you stop where you like and reach places the buses skip.
What do I need to rent a car in Sarajevo?
A valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, your passport for ID, and usually to be 21 or over (with a young-driver surcharge under 25). A UK or EU licence is accepted for short stays; carry an International Driving Permit too if your licence isn't in the Latin alphabet.
Which side of the road do you drive on, and what are the roads like?
You drive on the right in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The A1 motorway and the main M17 toward Mostar are good, but many mountain and eastern routes are older, winding two-lane roads, so allow extra time and take care in winter snow around Jahorina and Bjelašnica.
Can I pick up my hire car at Sarajevo airport?
Yes. Providers have desks at Sarajevo International (SJJ), a small airport near Ilidža a short distance from the centre, with cars collected just steps from arrivals. You can also choose a downtown pickup if you'd rather sightsee on foot first. Compare Sarajevo car hire prices →
Can I drive my rental car from Sarajevo to Mostar or across the border?
The M17 to Mostar (about 130 km through the Neretva canyon) is a straightforward, scenic drive. For crossing into Croatia or Montenegro, tell the rental company first — you'll usually need a Green Card and sometimes written cross-border permission, and not every car is cleared to leave Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Sarajevo?
You can compare the international rental firms present at Sarajevo International (SJJ) alongside trusted local Bosnian agencies that often know the mountain routes and border paperwork best. Rather than fixing on one brand, compare them together on price, fuel policy and insurance excess to find the best deal for your dates.
