Why hire a car in Barcelona

Barcelona itself is one of Europe's most walkable cities — the Gothic Quarter, the Ramblas, Park Güell and the Sagrada Família are all within a compact area served by an excellent metro. But the city sits in a privileged position: within two hours you can be in the Pyrenees, in the wine country of the Penedès, on the wild coast of the Costa Brava or at the monastery of Montserrat, one of the most dramatic settings in Spain. None of these are properly served by public transport from the city, and all of them reward the flexibility of your own car.

Sitges, the sophisticated beach town 40 km south along the C-32, takes 30 minutes and is far preferable to Barcelona's city beaches for a day by the sea. The Priorat wine region, the Roman city of Tarragona and the surreal Salvador Dalí triangle — Figueres, Cadaqués and Púbol — all become feasible day trips or overnighters. Picking up a hire car at BCN airport on arrival and returning it on departure is the smoothest way to combine a few days in the city with a wider Catalan road trip.

What to know before you drive around Barcelona

  • Don't drive in central Barcelona. The city centre has a Low Emission Zone (ZBE) with fines for non-compliant vehicles, severe congestion and paid parking at €3–4/hour. Almost every hire car at BCN will be ZBE-compliant — confirm with the agency — but the metro and bus are still better for sightseeing. Collect the car on the day you leave the city.
  • Collect at Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN). Hire desks are in the arrivals area of both T1 and T2. The airport is 15 km south-west of the city. Compare Barcelona car hire prices →
  • The AP-7 motorway network is tolled. Major motorways in Catalonia carry tolls; expect €5–15 for typical day-trip runs. The parallel N-II and C-32 are toll-free but slower in summer. Check whether your booking includes a toll transponder.
  • Montserrat road is steep and busy. The road up to the monastery has switchbacks and fills with coaches by 10 a.m. in peak season. Leave early or take the rack railway from Monistrol de Montserrat and save the car for other trips.
  • Parking outside the centre. Sitges, Tarragona and Costa Brava resorts all have ample paid parking at €1–2/hour. Free parking is usually available outside main resort areas on weekdays.
  • Heading further? The AP-7 south continues into the Costa Daurada and connects to Málaga on a longer coast road trip.

Where to collect your hire car in Barcelona

Hire desks are in the arrivals halls of T1 and T2 at Barcelona–El Prat (BCN), 15 km south-west of the city. City-centre offices near Sants station and Passeig de Gràcia suit travellers who want to explore Barcelona first and drive out afterward.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Do I need a car to visit Barcelona?
Not for the city itself — the metro, bus and walking cover all the main sights. A hire car makes sense for day trips to Montserrat, the Pyrenees, Costa Brava, Penedès wine country and Sitges. Most visitors collect the car only when they're ready to leave the city.
Where do I pick up a hire car in Barcelona?
Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN), 15 km south-west of the city centre, is the main pickup point with desks in both T1 and T2. City-centre offices near Passeig de Gràcia and Sants station are also available.
Can I drive a hire car into central Barcelona?
Legally yes, as long as the car meets the ZBE (Low Emission Zone) requirements — most modern rental cars do. But parking is expensive (€3–4/hour) and traffic is heavy. It's much easier to use the metro for city sightseeing and only use the car for out-of-city trips.
Are there tolls on Barcelona's motorways?
Yes — most major Catalan motorways carry tolls. Expect around €5–15 for typical day-trip distances. Toll booths accept cash and card. Some agencies provide a toll transponder; check your booking. Toll-free alternatives exist but are slower in summer.
How far is Montserrat from Barcelona?
About 55 km north-west via the A-2 and C-55, around 50–60 minutes by car. The monastery sits at 725 m and the road has steep switchbacks. An early start (before 9 a.m.) avoids the worst of the coach traffic.
Which car hire companies operate in Barcelona?
All major international brands — Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, Budget, Sixt and others — operate at BCN. Local agencies often undercut on longer rentals. Compare all Barcelona car hire prices →
