Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands, running nearly 80 km from the medieval walled city in the north down to the wind-battered sandbar at Prasonisi in the south. Most visitors see only the well-trodden east coast — the UNESCO Old Town, the resort strip through Faliraki, and the clifftop village of Lindos — reachable by organised excursions and the island's coach network on a fixed schedule. The other half of Rhodes is quieter and largely ignored by day-trip buses: the Valley of the Butterflies inland, the restored Italian-era spa at Kallithea Springs just south of town, the ruined hilltop castle at Monolithos on the wilder west coast, and Prasonisi itself, where the Aegean and Mediterranean meet and windsurfers and kitesurfers gather.

A hire car turns Rhodes from a handful of coach-tour stops into a proper road trip. You can be at Lindos before the excursion buses arrive, spend an unhurried afternoon at Kallithea Springs, and still make it to Monolithos for sunset over the Aegean — all in one day, all on your own schedule, without paying for a guided tour to see any of it.
