Why hire a car in Rhodes

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands, running nearly 80 km from the medieval walled city in the north down to the wind-battered sandbar at Prasonisi in the south. Most visitors see only the well-trodden east coast — the UNESCO Old Town, the resort strip through Faliraki, and the clifftop village of Lindos — reachable by organised excursions and the island's coach network on a fixed schedule. The other half of Rhodes is quieter and largely ignored by day-trip buses: the Valley of the Butterflies inland, the restored Italian-era spa at Kallithea Springs just south of town, the ruined hilltop castle at Monolithos on the wilder west coast, and Prasonisi itself, where the Aegean and Mediterranean meet and windsurfers and kitesurfers gather.

A hire car turns Rhodes from a handful of coach-tour stops into a proper road trip. You can be at Lindos before the excursion buses arrive, spend an unhurried afternoon at Kallithea Springs, and still make it to Monolithos for sunset over the Aegean — all in one day, all on your own schedule, without paying for a guided tour to see any of it.

What to know before you drive in Rhodes

  • Collect at Rhodes Diagoras Airport (RHO). The airport sits near Ixia and Ialysos, about 14 km south-west of Rhodes Town. Hire desks are in the arrivals hall, and most agencies also offer pickup points in Rhodes Town and the main resort areas along the east coast. Compare Rhodes car hire prices →
  • Greece drives on the right. Coastal roads on the east side, from Rhodes Town through Faliraki to Lindos, are well maintained and generally easy going. The west and south coasts are quieter but narrower and hillier in places, particularly around Monolithos.
  • The Old Town is car-free. Rhodes Old Town's medieval streets — the Street of the Knights, the Palace of the Grand Master — are pedestrian only. Park in one of the paid car parks just outside the walls and walk in.
  • Lindos village is also car-free. The whitewashed lanes below the clifftop acropolis are too narrow for vehicles. Park in the car park at the village entrance and walk up, or take one of the donkeys that carry visitors to the acropolis gate.
  • Prasonisi is only reachable by a sandbar. At the island's southern tip, a narrow strip of sand connects Rhodes to a small islet — a well-known kitesurfing and windsurfing spot. The approach road is straightforward, but check conditions if visiting in strong winter winds.
  • Ferries to other Dodecanese islands and Turkey. Rhodes port connects by ferry to Kos and Symi, as well as internationally to Marmaris in Turkey. If you're island-hopping, leave the hire car at the port car park rather than trying to take it across.

Where to collect your hire car in Rhodes

Rhodes Diagoras Airport (RHO), about 14 km south-west of Rhodes Town near Ixia and Ialysos, is the main pickup hub. Rhodes Town and the larger east-coast resorts also have pickup points worth checking if you're staying outside the airport area.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Rhodes?
Yes, especially if you want to see beyond the Old Town and Faliraki. Rhodes is a big island — nearly 80 km long — and a hire car gets you to Lindos, the Valley of the Butterflies, Monolithos Castle and Prasonisi on your own schedule rather than a fixed excursion timetable.
Where do I pick up a hire car in Rhodes?
Rhodes Diagoras Airport (RHO), about 14 km south-west of Rhodes Town near Ixia and Ialysos, is the main pickup point. Most agencies also have desks in Rhodes Town and the larger resort areas along the east coast, such as Faliraki.
Can I drive into Rhodes Old Town?
No — the medieval walled Old Town is pedestrian only. Use one of the paid car parks just outside the walls and walk in. The same applies to central Lindos, where the village lanes below the acropolis are car-free.
Are the roads in Rhodes easy to drive?
The east coast road from Rhodes Town through Faliraki to Lindos is well maintained and straightforward. The west and south coasts, including the approach to Monolithos Castle, are quieter but narrower and hillier in places — take these sections at a relaxed pace.
How do I get to Prasonisi from Rhodes Town?
Prasonisi is at the southern tip of the island, roughly 90 km from Rhodes Town — allow around an hour and a half by car. The site is only reachable via a narrow sandbar connecting the main island to a small islet, and it's one of the Mediterranean's best-known kitesurfing spots.
Which car hire companies operate in Rhodes?
International brands including Hertz, Avis and Europcar operate at RHO airport alongside local Greek agencies with desks in Rhodes Town and the main resort areas. Local operators often have competitive rates and flexible pickup points along the east coast. Compare all Rhodes car hire prices →
