Tenerife is bigger and more varied than most visitors expect. The lush, often cloudy north around La Laguna and the Anaga mountains feels like a different island from the dry, sunny south around Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. Local buses (guaguas) connect the main towns, but the places worth the trip — Masca, Garachico, El Teide at sunrise, the Anaga coves — sit well off the regular routes.

With your own car you skip the waiting and the changes, and you decide when to head up to the Cañadas for the sea of clouds. For a week's holiday, car hire almost always works out cheaper and freer than stringing together organised excursions — and it lets you chase the sun, which on this island can move from one coast to the other in half an hour.
