Rent a Car in Perpignan

Perpignan's old town, centred on Le Castillet and the Palais des Rois de Majorque, is small enough to see on foot in a morning. A car adds little inside the city itself. The reason to hire a car in Perpignan is the Roussillon around it: Collioure, the pastel fishing port painted by Matisse and Derain, is about 30 minutes south-east, and the Côte Vermeille continues from there down to Banyuls-sur-Mer and Cerbère near the Spanish border. Argelès-sur-Mer and Canet-en-Roussillon's beaches are 20-25 minutes away in the other direction.

Inland, the Cerdagne and the wider Pyrénées are about an hour to an hour and a half south-west, with views toward Mont Canigou along the way, and Carcassonne's medieval citadel is roughly an hour north-west. Perpignan is also only about 30 minutes from the Spanish border at La Jonquera via the AP-7/A9, making it a practical base for exploring both sides. None of these connect well by train or bus if you want to combine more than one in a day, so most visitors renting a car in Perpignan do it for the coast, the mountains or a cross-border day trip — not for getting around the old town.
