Why hire a car in Athens

Athens itself is best explored on foot — the Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki and the National Archaeological Museum are all within walking distance of each other, and the metro is efficient for moving between neighbourhoods. But the city is also the best base on the Greek mainland for day trips and longer drives, and public transport reaches very few of them. Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon are 70 km south along the coast road; Delphi is 170 km north-west up into the mountains; and the entry point to the Peloponnese, Corinth, is under an hour on the motorway.

For island travellers, Athens is the hub. The port of Piraeus is 10 km from the city centre, and from there ferries run to Hydra, Spetses, Aegina and the Cyclades. Hire a car in Athens, drive to Piraeus and leave the car there while you island-hop, or combine a mainland loop through Nafplio, Mycenae and Epidaurus with the city. Athens Airport (ATH) is particularly convenient — collecting your car on arrival means you can drive straight to a Peloponnese hotel before the motorway traffic builds.

What to know before you drive around Athens

  • Collect at Athens International (ATH). Eleftherios Venizelos Airport is about 33 km east of the city centre, around 40 minutes by motorway. Hire desks are in the arrivals hall. Compare Athens car hire prices →
  • Don't drive into central Athens unless you need to. The historic centre has a traffic restriction zone (odd/even plate system on some days), heavy congestion and very limited parking. Use the metro from the airport or your hotel and collect the car when you leave the city.
  • The Attiki Odos motorway ring has tolls. The main motorway around Athens uses electronic tolling — most hire cars include a transponder or a flat fee for toll roads. Check your booking confirmation; if no transponder, use the manual toll lanes.
  • Drive on the right. Greece drives right; speed limit 130 km/h on motorways, 90 on secondary roads, 50 in town. Police radar and cameras are common on main routes.
  • Parking at the port of Piraeus. If you're heading to the ferry, paid parking near the port is straightforward but fills early in summer. Arrive at least an hour before departure and check which gate your ferry leaves from — Piraeus has multiple terminals.
  • Planning island visits? Ferries from Piraeus reach Santorini in 5–8 hours and Crete overnight. Hire cars on the islands are entirely separate bookings.

Where to collect your hire car in Athens

Most visitors pick up at Athens International Airport (ATH), 33 km east of the city. City-centre offices near Syntagma are useful if you're spending time in Athens first and only need the car for day trips or onward travel.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Do I need a car to visit Athens?
Not for the city itself — the Acropolis, museums and Plaka are all walkable, and the metro covers the main tourist areas. A car becomes useful for day trips to Cape Sounion, Delphi, the Peloponnese or when driving on to other destinations in mainland Greece.
Where do I pick up a hire car in Athens?
Athens International Airport (ATH), about 33 km east of the city, is the main pickup point with all major brands in the arrivals hall. City-centre offices near Syntagma Square are also available if you prefer to collect the car only when you're leaving Athens.
Can I drive into the centre of Athens with a hire car?
Technically yes, but it's not recommended. The historic centre has a traffic restriction zone, heavy congestion and very limited parking. Most visitors collect the car only when they're leaving Athens for day trips or other destinations.
How far is Delphi from Athens?
Around 170 km via the E962 motorway, taking about 2 to 2.5 hours. Delphi is a natural day trip — leave early, spend the morning at the sanctuary and museum, and you'll be back in Athens by early evening.
What do I need to rent a car in Greece?
A full driving licence, a credit card for the deposit and generally a minimum age of 21 (young-driver surcharges often apply under 25). EU and UK licences are accepted; holders of other licences should carry an International Driving Permit.
Which car hire companies operate in Athens?
All major international brands — Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget, Enterprise and Sixt — have desks at ATH. Greek local agencies often offer better value, particularly for economy and compact cars. Compare all Athens car hire prices →
