Rent a Car in La Paz, Bolivia

At 3,600 metres above sea level, La Paz spills down a canyon under the snow of Illimani — and a rental car is how you get out of the bowl. Drive the Yungas Road down to Coroico, cross to Copacabana on Lake Titicaca, or skip the bus queues altogether. Compare suppliers here and book with free cancellation on most cars.

La Paz isn't covered by all six international giants the way Western Europe is. Hertz and Europcar (through its Keddy brand) both run confirmed operations here, and the Bolivian agency Flexways is a common option for local pickups and local know-how. Avis lists a country page too, but Sixt, Enterprise and Budget have little to no verified presence in Bolivia — so we show you what's actually bookable for La Paz rather than assume a familiar name is here.

Why rent a car in La Paz

La Paz is not a place you simply arrive at — you descend into it. El Alto airport sits above 4,000 metres, one of the highest in the world, and the city itself is packed into a canyon a few hundred metres lower, ringed by the Andes. That geography is also the reason to rent a car here: some of Bolivia's best trips start right at the edge of the city. The old road to Coroico, nicknamed the “Death Road” after decades as the world's most dangerous route, drops from around 4,600 metres to under 1,500 in a single afternoon of driving, swapping bare altiplano for Yungas jungle in a few hours. Lake Titicaca and the town of Copacabana are a half-day away across the Tiquina Strait, where your car gets floated over on a wooden barge while you cross separately by passenger boat.

Public transport covers the basics — inter-city buses to Copacabana, Coroico and beyond run daily — but they go where the timetable says, not where you want to stop. With your own car you can pull over at a viewpoint on the way down to the Yungas, stay in Copacabana past the last bus back, or detour to the eroded canyons of Valle de la Luna on the edge of the city without booking a separate tour. Uyuni's salt flats are the one trip worth leaving to a specialist: at 550-650 km of rough altiplano track, it is not a realistic self-drive day trip from here.

What to know before you drive in La Paz

  • Drive on the right, mind the altitude. Bolivia drives on the right, same as most of South America. The real adjustment is the elevation: engines, brakes and your own reactions feel different above 3,600 metres, and altitude sickness (soroche) is a genuine risk on arrival — give yourself a quiet day before getting behind the wheel if you've just landed.
  • Documents and deposit. A valid home driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, and your passport. Bolivia hasn't ratified the treaties that make an International Driving Permit compulsory, but counters and police checkpoints routinely ask for one anyway. Minimum age usually runs 21-25 depending on the supplier, often with a young-driver surcharge.
  • Speed limits and insurance. Expect 40 km/h in town and 80 km/h on the open road, a 0.05% blood-alcohol limit, and mandatory SOAT basic accident cover by law — check your rental includes it.
  • Roadblocks and rain. Civic strikes (“bloqueos”) can shut a Bolivian highway with almost no warning, and the rainy season from November to March adds landslide risk on mountain routes. Check conditions before setting off, especially toward Coroico or Copacabana.
  • Crossing borders. Most rental contracts forbid taking the car into Peru, Chile or Argentina without prior written authorisation and extra insurance from the supplier — worth sorting out before you drive toward Titicaca if continuing into Peru is on your mind.
  • Airport pickup. El Alto International (LPB) sits about 8-13 km above downtown, roughly 20-30 minutes by road, and most suppliers meet you there or in the city centre. Compare La Paz car hire prices →

Where to pick up your car in La Paz

Most pickups happen in the city centre or near El Alto International Airport (LPB), about 10 km above downtown La Paz.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in La Paz, Bolivia?
Yes, if you plan to leave the city. La Paz itself gets around fine on the cable car (Mi Teleférico) and taxis, but a car is what gets you down the Yungas Road to Coroico, across to Copacabana on Lake Titicaca, or out to Valle de la Luna on your own schedule instead of a fixed bus timetable.
What do I need to rent a car in La Paz?
A valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, and your passport. Bolivia hasn't signed the treaties that make an International Driving Permit compulsory, but rental counters and police checkpoints routinely ask for one anyway, so bring it along. Minimum age is usually 21-25 depending on the supplier, often with a young-driver surcharge. Check what each supplier requires →
Which side of the road do they drive on in Bolivia?
Bolivia drives on the right, same as most of South America. The bigger adjustment in La Paz is the altitude — the city sits around 3,600-3,650 metres and El Alto airport is even higher, so engines, brakes and your own reactions can feel different until you're used to it.
Can I pick up a rental car at El Alto International Airport?
Yes. El Alto International (LPB) is about 8-13 km from downtown La Paz, roughly 20-30 minutes by road, and most suppliers meet travellers there or in the city centre. Compare pickup options for La Paz →
Can I drive to Lake Titicaca or down the Yungas Road?
Both are popular self-drive trips from La Paz. Copacabana on Lake Titicaca is about 155 km and 2.5-4 hours away, including a short ferry crossing of the Tiquina Strait where your car rides a barge while you cross separately by boat. The old road to Coroico, the former “Death Road,” drops roughly 3,000 metres over about 61 km — mostly used by cyclists now that a modern bypass exists, but still driveable at a cautious pace in a car suited to gravel. Uyuni's salt flats, by contrast, are 550-650 km of rough altiplano track and not realistic as a self-drive day trip.
Can I take a rental car into Peru, Chile or Argentina?
Usually not without asking first. Most Bolivian rental contracts prohibit crossing into neighbouring countries unless you arrange prior written authorisation and extra insurance with the supplier — worth sorting out before you drive toward Copacabana if continuing into Peru is on your mind.
Which car rental companies can I compare in La Paz?
In La Paz you'll typically find Hertz and Europcar (via its Keddy brand) alongside the Bolivian agency Flexways, which handles a lot of local pickups. Avis has a Bolivia page too, but Sixt, Enterprise and Budget aren't reliably present here the way they are in Europe or the US. See who's available for your dates →
