Rent a Car in Marseille

Marseille's core — the Vieux-Port, the narrow lanes of Le Panier, the MuCEM and the climb up to Notre-Dame de la Garde — is dense, walkable and well covered by the metro and tram network. A car adds little inside the city itself, and parking near the harbour is tight and metered most of the day. The reason to hire a car in Marseille is everything just outside it: the Calanques National Park's trailheads at Callelongue and Sormiou are only really practical to reach by road, Cassis with its cliffs and boat tours is about 25 minutes east, and Aix-en-Provence is roughly 30 minutes away via the A51 or A7.

Further out, the Camargue and its wetlands are about an hour and a half west along the A7 and A54, making a full day trip realistic if you leave early. The Corniche Kennedy along the coast is worth driving in its own right for the sea views south of the Vieux-Port. None of these connect well by combining trains, buses and boats in a single day, so most visitors who rent a car in Marseille do it for the Calanques, Cassis, Aix and the Camargue — not for getting around the city centre.
