Why hire a car in Marseille

Marseille's core — the Vieux-Port, the narrow lanes of Le Panier, the MuCEM and the climb up to Notre-Dame de la Garde — is dense, walkable and well covered by the metro and tram network. A car adds little inside the city itself, and parking near the harbour is tight and metered most of the day. The reason to hire a car in Marseille is everything just outside it: the Calanques National Park's trailheads at Callelongue and Sormiou are only really practical to reach by road, Cassis with its cliffs and boat tours is about 25 minutes east, and Aix-en-Provence is roughly 30 minutes away via the A51 or A7.

Further out, the Camargue and its wetlands are about an hour and a half west along the A7 and A54, making a full day trip realistic if you leave early. The Corniche Kennedy along the coast is worth driving in its own right for the sea views south of the Vieux-Port. None of these connect well by combining trains, buses and boats in a single day, so most visitors who rent a car in Marseille do it for the Calanques, Cassis, Aix and the Camargue — not for getting around the city centre.

What to know before you drive in Marseille

  • Collect at Marseille Provence Airport (MRS). The airport sits about 27 km north-west of the centre, near Marignane, with desks for all the major agencies in the terminal. Compare Marseille car hire prices →
  • The Calanques need a car, but not all the way in. Roads reach trailheads like Callelongue and Sormiou, but the calanques near Cassis are usually visited by boat tour from the harbour rather than driven to directly — park in Cassis and book the boat separately.
  • The A55, A50 and A7 motorways link the region. The A55 runs along the coast toward Martigues, the A50 heads east toward Toulon, and the A7/A51 go north to Aix-en-Provence and beyond — useful for day trips without doubling back through central Marseille.
  • Parking in Le Panier and around the Vieux-Port is limited and metered. Use a paid car park rather than circling for street parking, especially during the summer tourist season.
  • Heading further? Cassis is about 25 minutes east, Aix-en-Provence about 30 minutes north, and the Camargue roughly 1.5 hours west if you want to extend the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Do I need a hire car in Marseille?
Not for the city itself — the Vieux-Port, Le Panier and the MuCEM are all walkable or a short metro ride apart. A hire car becomes worthwhile once you want to reach the Calanques trailheads, Cassis, Aix-en-Provence or the Camargue, none of which combine well by public transport in a single day.
Where do I collect my hire car in Marseille?
Marseille Provence Airport (MRS), about 27 km north-west of the centre near Marignane, has desks for all the major agencies in the terminal. It's the standard pickup point for visitors flying in for a Provence trip.
Can I drive to the Calanques from Marseille?
You can drive to some trailheads, such as Callelongue and Sormiou, but many of the best-known calanques near Cassis are reached by boat tour rather than by road. A car gets you to the starting point; the water is often how you see the cliffs themselves.
How far is Cassis from Marseille?
About 25 minutes by car via the coast road or the A50. Cassis is a popular base for calanques boat tours and its own small harbour is worth a wander before or after.
Is it worth driving to Aix-en-Provence from Marseille?
Yes — Aix is about 30 minutes north via the A51 or A7 and makes an easy half-day trip for its old town and markets, something that takes considerably longer by combining bus and train connections.
Which car hire companies operate in Marseille?
Sixt, Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget and Enterprise all have desks at Marseille Provence Airport. Compare all Marseille car hire prices →
