Why renting a car in Crete pays off

Crete is 250 kilometres long and takes most of a day to cross by public transport — if the buses even go where you want. The island's north coast has the main towns, the resorts and the fast E75 highway; the south coast has the beaches that define Crete for most visitors: Elafonissi, Balos, Matala and dozens of smaller coves with no direct bus connection. Knossos is easy enough to reach from Heraklion by taxi, but the Samaria Gorge, the Lasithi Plateau, the gorge villages of the interior and the western tip of the island are car territory.

With a hire car you're not tied to the resort or the afternoon bus schedule. You can pick up at Heraklion or Chania airport and start immediately, reach Balos before the boat trips arrive, drive the mountain road through Sfakia at your own pace and still make it back for dinner. Crete rewards slow, exploratory driving more than almost any other Mediterranean island.

What to know before you drive in Crete

  • North coast is fast; south coast is slow. The E75 along the north runs like a motorway and is well maintained. South-coast roads are narrow, winding and sometimes unpaved near the coast — allow much more time than the map suggests.
  • Some roads require a 4x4. A handful of the most remote south-coast beaches and mountain villages have rough tracks. Most visitors with a standard small car never need to leave the sealed road network, but check conditions locally if you're planning an off-the-beaten-path route.
  • Two airports, one island. You can pick up at Heraklion (HER) in the east or Chania (CHQ) in the west — one-way rentals between them are available but usually cost more. If your itinerary crosses the island, ask about drop-off fees at booking.
  • Parking in Heraklion and Chania old town. Both historic centres are best reached on foot. Park in the signed car parks outside the walls rather than fighting for street space inside.
  • Fill up before heading south. Petrol stations are plentiful on the north coast. The south coast and mountain interior have far fewer — fill up before a long southern detour. Compare Crete prices here ↗

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Crete?
Yes — more so than almost any other Greek island. Crete is enormous, and its best beaches, gorges, archaeological sites and mountain villages are spread across 250 kilometres of varied terrain. Without a car you're limited to the resort and whatever a bus or organised tour covers. With one, the whole island is yours.
Should I pick up at Heraklion or Chania airport?
Depends on your itinerary. Heraklion (HER) is better for Knossos, the Lasithi Plateau and the east of the island. Chania (CHQ) is better for Elafonissi, Balos, the Samaria Gorge and the west. Both have a wide choice of rental companies on site.
What do I need to rent a car in Crete?
A valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit hold, and generally to be 21 or over (surcharges often apply under 23 or 25 depending on the provider). Non-EU licence holders should verify whether their licence is accepted in Greece or whether an international permit is required.
Do I need a 4x4 in Crete?
For the standard tourist circuit — Knossos, Elafonissi, Balos, Samaria, Rethymno, Chania — no. A small or compact car handles all sealed roads comfortably. If you're planning to reach specific remote beaches or mountain villages with rough access tracks, a higher-clearance vehicle helps but is rarely essential.
How long does it take to drive across Crete?
Around 3 hours non-stop from Chania to Sitia via the north-coast E75 in good conditions. Cross-island routes from north to south through the mountains take longer — allow 90 minutes for a north-to-south crossing depending on where you start. The south-coast road running east-west is scenic but slow.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Crete?
We compare the big international names (Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, Budget) alongside trusted Crete local firms such as trusted local agencies — over 1,000 providers in total. You see each price and book whichever suits you best, with free cancellation.
