Why hiring a car in Aruba is worth it

Aruba is small — roughly 30 km from the California Lighthouse in the north-west to Baby Beach in the south-east — and famously flat and dry, which makes it one of the easiest Caribbean islands to drive. The resort strip along Eagle Beach and Palm Beach is walkable in itself, but the things that make Aruba special are spread out: the rugged north-east coast, the Natural Pool (Conchi), the California Lighthouse, the Dutch colonial capital Oranjestad and the calm snorkelling at Baby Beach down south. None of those are a short stroll from your hotel.

The Arubus line runs between Oranjestad, the airport and the high-rise hotels reliably enough, but it thins out fast once you leave that corridor and barely touches Arikok National Park or the wilder eastern shore. Taxis are plentiful but priced per trip and add up quickly over a week. With your own car you can chase the sunset at the lighthouse, detour to a roadside pastechi stand and reach the beaches no timetable will get you to — all on your own clock.

What to know before you drive in Aruba

  • You drive on the right. Aruba follows right-hand traffic, the same as the US and mainland Europe. If you're coming from the UK or Ireland, take your first roundabout in Oranjestad slowly and remember most of the car sits on your left — within an hour it feels natural.
  • Nearly everyone collects at the airport. Queen Beatrix International (AUA) is the main pickup point, with rental offices a short walk or shuttle from arrivals. Many local agencies will also deliver to or collect from your hotel in the Palm Beach and Eagle Beach zone if you'd rather settle in first and grab the car on day two.
  • The paved roads are easy; the outback isn't. The main coastal and ring roads are smooth and well signed, but Arikok National Park, the Natural Pool and the north-east coast are rough, rutted dirt tracks. A regular car simply won't make it — and most rental contracts ban off-road driving — so book a 4x4 or SUV if those are on your list.
  • Fuel is straightforward and there are no tolls. Aruba has no toll roads, petrol stations are easy to find around Oranjestad and the hotel strip, and the island's compact size means a tank lasts. Prices are in Aruban florin but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, including at the pump.
  • Bring the right paperwork. A valid driving licence from home is accepted for tourists — most agencies don't require an International Driving Permit — plus your passport and a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Minimum age is usually 21–23, with a surcharge for younger drivers. Compare Aruba car hire prices →
  • Local tip: respect the wind and the sun. Aruba's constant trade winds blow sand and grit, so park nose-into-the-wind where you can and shake out before you load up. Carry water, leave nothing valuable on show at remote beach car parks, and fill the tank before heading to Arikok — there are no stations inside the park.

Where to pick up your car in Aruba

Most travellers collect at Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA), with many local agencies also based in Oranjestad and offering delivery to the Palm Beach and Eagle Beach hotel zone.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Aruba?
For most visitors, yes. The beaches, Arikok National Park, the California Lighthouse and Baby Beach are spread across a 30 km island and poorly linked by bus, so a car turns half-day excursions into easy detours. Over a week it usually works out cheaper and far more flexible than stacking up taxis.
Do I need a 4x4 in Aruba?
Only if you want to explore the wild side. A normal car is fine for the resorts, Oranjestad and the paved coast roads, but the Natural Pool, Arikok National Park and the north-east coast are rough dirt tracks that need a 4x4 or SUV — and most contracts forbid taking a regular car off-road. Compare SUV and 4x4 hire in Aruba →
Which side of the road do they drive on in Aruba?
Aruba drives on the right, like the US and mainland Europe. The roads are flat, well signed and easy, so even drivers used to the left-hand UK side adjust quickly — just take the first roundabout or two with care.
What do I need to rent a car in Aruba?
A valid driving licence from your home country (an International Driving Permit isn't usually required), your passport for ID, and a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. The minimum age is typically 21–23, with a young-driver surcharge for the under-25s.
Can I pick up my car at Aruba airport?
Yes — Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) is the main pickup point and the most convenient for most trips, with offices a short walk or shuttle from arrivals. Many local agencies will also deliver to your hotel in the Palm Beach area if you'd rather start driving on day two.
Which car rental companies can I compare in Aruba?
We bring together trusted local Aruba agencies such as Amigo Car Rental and Tropic Car Rental, so you can see each price side by side — including airport pickup at Queen Beatrix and hotel delivery — and book whichever fits your trip best, with free cancellation on most bookings.
