Mykonos Town — Chora — is the postcard: a maze of whitewashed lanes, the waterfront houses of Little Venice built right over the sea, and the row of windmills looking out across the harbour. It's also entirely pedestrian at its core, so no car will get you into the old town itself. But most of what makes a Mykonos holiday — the beach clubs at Paradise and Super Paradise, the upscale sands of Psarou, the inland village of Ano Mera with its Panagia Tourliani monastery — sits well outside walking distance, and the local bus network, while it exists, runs to a limited schedule and gets crowded fast in peak season.

A hire car changes the shape of the island. You collect it at Mykonos Airport (JMK), just 4 km from town, and from there every beach and village is a short, manageable drive. Park just outside Chora's pedestrian centre and walk in — it's a small price for being able to leave for Ano Mera in the morning, Psarou at lunch and Super Paradise for sunset, all in the same day, on your own timetable rather than the bus company's.
