Peschiera del Garda's star-shaped Venetian fortress and canal-lined old town sit right where the Mincio river flows out of the lake, and the whole historic core is easy to see on foot in an afternoon. What makes a car worth having is the fortress town's position at the southern gateway to the lake: Gardaland, Italy's largest theme park, and the Movieland and Caneva World parks are all within a few minutes' drive, and Sirmione's thermal peninsula is about 20 minutes around the southern shore.

A car also puts Verona within easy reach, about 25 minutes north-west, with its Roman arena, Juliet's balcony and the Valpolicella wine roads beyond it. Heading the other way, Lazise and Bardolino string along the eastern shore within 15–20 minutes, making Peschiera a practical, well-connected base for touring the whole southern half of Lake Garda without doubling back through traffic each time.
