What to know before you drive from El Arenal

  • Airport is 10 minutes away. Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) is the closest airport to El Arenal on the island. All major rental companies have desks there — collecting on arrival is the most practical option.
  • Bay of Palma road is flat and fast. The MA-19 coast road connecting El Arenal to Palma is well maintained and quick. The city centre is 20 minutes by car, less by motorway.
  • Serra de Tramuntana is slow and scenic. The mountain road (Ma-10) along the northwest coast is one of the most beautiful drives in the Mediterranean — and one of the most winding. Allow double your sat-nav estimate and avoid large vehicles on this route.
  • East coast coves need a car. Cala Mondragó, Cala Llombards and the beaches of the Llevant peninsula are reachable only by car. They're well worth the drive from El Arenal — typically 45–60 minutes.
