Why hire a car in Almaty
Almaty sits right against the Tian Shan, and the best of it is spread out in every direction. A car turns a list of "maybe one day" trips into an easy weekend: the Medeu skating rink and Shymbulak ski resort are barely 30 minutes up the valley on the road past Medeu Dam, Big Almaty Lake glows turquoise at the end of a steep climb through the BAO gorge, and the surreal red walls of the Charyn Canyon are roughly 200 km east along the A351 toward the Chinese border. Push a little further and you reach the Kolsai Lakes and nearby Kaindy, deep in the forested foothills near the Kyrgyz frontier.
Almaty's metro and buses cover the grid of the centre well enough, but they stop at the city limits — nothing public runs up to Big Almaty Lake or out across the steppe to Charyn. The marshrutka services that do reach the canyons and lakes are infrequent, slow, and drop you far from the trailheads, and organised day tours lock you into someone else's schedule. With your own car hire you set off before dawn for the canyon, linger over the lake views, and swing back through a roadside shashlik cafe whenever you like. For anyone treating Almaty as the launch point for a longer Central Asia overland run toward Bishkek or the Kolsai valleys, a car is the obvious first move.
