Why renting a car in La Palma pays off

La Palma is the greenest and most mountainous of the Canary Islands — and one of the least visited, which is exactly what makes it worth exploring properly. The island rises steeply from the coast, and almost everything worth seeing sits above 1,000 metres: the vast Caldera de Taburiente crater, the Roque de los Muchachos observatory, the ancient laurisilva forests of the north and the dramatic volcanic landscape around Cumbre Vieja in the south.

Public buses exist but are infrequent and stop well short of the best viewpoints and trails. With your own car you can reach the caldera rim at sunrise, drive the winding LP-1 between cliff-backed villages and be back on the black-sand beach at Charco Verde before lunch. On an island this compact, car hire is genuinely the difference between seeing a lot and seeing everything.

What to know before you drive in La Palma

  • No motorways. La Palma has no fast roads. Everything is two-lane — often mountain two-lane with tight bends and steep drops. Take the sat-nav times as loose estimates and enjoy the pace.
  • Mountain roads require focus. The LP-4 to Roque de los Muchachos and the roads into the caldera are narrow with little margin. A compact car is easier to manage than an SUV on these routes.
  • Fuel up in Santa Cruz. The capital has the most stations. Villages in the interior may not have one, so fill up before heading uphill for the day.
  • Canary tax advantage. Petrol is cheaper here than on the Spanish mainland or in most of northern Europe — a small bonus for longer driving days.
  • Pick up at the airport. Santa Cruz de La Palma Airport (SPC) has rental desks on site. Book early — the island has fewer cars available than the larger Canary destinations, so stock runs low in peak season. Compare La Palma prices here ↗

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in La Palma?
Yes — more so than most islands. La Palma's best landscapes are spread across a steep, compact interior with limited bus coverage. Without a car you miss the caldera, the observatory road and most of the northern forest villages. Even for a four-day trip, hiring a car is the practical choice.
What do I need to rent a car in La Palma?
A valid driving licence, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit hold, and usually to be 21 or over (surcharge may apply under 25). Non-EU visitors should check whether their licence is accepted or whether an international driving permit is required.
Can I drive to Roque de los Muchachos in a hire car?
Yes. The road to the summit (2,426 m) is paved but narrow and winding — particularly the last stretch. Most standard hire cars handle it fine. Allow 45–60 minutes from Santa Cruz, go early to beat clouds, and take a warm layer as it can be significantly colder at the top.
What size car should I hire in La Palma?
A small or compact car is the practical choice. The mountain roads are narrow and reversing to pass oncoming traffic is a real possibility. An automatic is worth requesting if you're not confident with a manual on steep inclines.
Is the Cumbre Vieja area safe to visit?
Yes. The 2021 eruption ended in December 2021 and most roads have since reopened. Some southern coastal areas were permanently altered by lava flows and remain restricted. Check current access notices locally — the rest of the island is fully open and unaffected.
Which car rental companies can I compare in La Palma?
We compare the big international names (Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, Budget) alongside trusted La Palma local firms such as trusted local agencies — over 1,000 providers in total. You see each price and book whichever suits you best, with free cancellation.
