Why renting a car in Georgia is worth it

Georgia packs an astonishing amount into a small country, and almost all of the best of it sits beyond the reach of timetables. Marshrutka minibuses connect the big towns, but the moment you want to follow the Georgian Military Highway up to Stepantsminda for the view of Gergeti Trinity Church, hop between wineries in Kakheti, or detour to the cave city of Uplistsikhe near Gori, you are on someone else's schedule. With your own car you simply go. Tbilisi to Kazbegi is around 150 km of spectacular mountain driving over the Jvari Pass; Tbilisi to Batumi on the Black Sea is roughly 370 km on the S1 motorway, an easy day with stops.

Fuel is cheap by European standards, distances are manageable, and the landscapes change from the semi-desert near Davit Gareja to alpine peaks in a single afternoon. A car turns a list of sights into a genuine road trip — the wine villages of Sighnaghi, the canyons and Prometheus Cave near Kutaisi, and, for the truly adventurous, the medieval stone towers of Svaneti. For a week's holiday, car hire almost always works out cheaper and far more flexible than chaining together tours and shared taxis, and it opens up corners of the Caucasus that buses never reach.

What to know before you drive in Georgia

  • You drive on the right. Traffic in Georgia keeps to the right-hand side of the road and you overtake on the left. If you are used to the UK or Ireland, take your first few junctions and roundabouts slowly — local driving in Tbilisi can be assertive, so leave plenty of space and don't rush.
  • Fly into Tbilisi, Kutaisi or Batumi. Most hire cars are collected at Tbilisi (TBS), but Kutaisi (KUT) is a major Wizz Air low-cost hub and a handy central base for western Georgia, while Batumi (BUS) suits a Black Sea coast trip. Pick up at the airport you land at to start driving straight away.
  • Roads vary wildly. Main routes like the S1 Tbilisi–Batumi highway are good, but mountain passes such as the road into Kazbegi are narrow and winding, and remote regions like Svaneti and Tusheti have rough, unpaved tracks where a 4x4 is strongly advised. In winter, snow closes or restricts the high passes — check conditions and consider snow tyres.
  • Fuel is cheap, tolls are minimal. Petrol and diesel cost noticeably less than in Western Europe, and Georgia has no widespread motorway tolls. Fill up before heading into the mountains around Kazbegi or Svaneti, as stations thin out in rural areas.
  • Licence, age and insurance. Most visitors can drive on a national licence for short stays, but an International Driving Permit is recommended if your licence isn't in the Latin alphabet. Bring your passport and a credit card in the main driver's name. Basic cover leaves you liable for an excess on any damage — reducing it to zero at booking is usually cheaper than the cover sold at the desk. Compare Georgia car hire prices →
  • Local tip. Download offline maps before you set off — mobile signal drops on the Jvari Pass and in the high Caucasus — and carry small Georgian lari in cash for rural fuel stops and parking attendants.

Where to pick up your hire car in Georgia

Most travellers collect their car at the airport they fly into — Tbilisi (TBS), Kutaisi (KUT) or Batumi (BUS) — though city-centre and hotel pickups in Tbilisi and Batumi are also widely available.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Is it worth renting a car in Georgia?
For most trips, yes. Marshrutka minibuses link the main towns but barely reach the mountain villages, wineries and viewpoints that make Georgia special. A car lets you drive the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi, tour Kakheti's wine region around Sighnaghi and reach the Black Sea on your own schedule, usually for less than a string of tours.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive in Georgia?
Visitors can generally drive on their home national licence for short tourist stays. That said, an International Driving Permit is recommended — especially if your licence is not in the Latin alphabet — and is cheap and quick to arrange before you travel. Always carry your passport and a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit.
Which side of the road do they drive on in Georgia, and is it safe?
Georgia drives on the right, and you overtake on the left. Main roads like the S1 to Batumi are good, but mountain passes such as the Jvari Pass to Kazbegi are narrow and winding and local driving can be fast, so keep your distance and avoid night driving in rural areas. In winter, snow can close the high passes — check conditions before heading up.
Can I pick up a car at Tbilisi, Kutaisi or Batumi airport?
Yes. Airport pickup is the most popular option at all three — Tbilisi (TBS), Kutaisi (KUT, a Wizz Air low-cost hub) and Batumi (BUS) — so you can drive off the moment you land. Compare car hire across Georgia's airports → to see what's available at each.
Do I need a 4x4 for Svaneti and the mountains?
For sealed roads like Tbilisi to Kazbegi a normal car is fine in good weather. But for remote regions such as Svaneti and Tusheti, where tracks are rough and unpaved, a 4x4 is strongly advised, and in winter you'll want one with proper snow tyres for the high passes. Match the car to your route when you book.
Which car hire companies can I compare in Georgia?
We bring together trusted local agencies with any international rental brands that genuinely operate in Georgia, mainly from Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi airports. Rather than assume a global giant is present, we show you what's actually bookable for your dates and route. Compare Georgia car hire prices →
