Why hire a car in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands and the one that most rewards drivers. Its defining feature is space — vast empty beaches, rolling volcanic hills and a near-total absence of crowds once you leave the main resorts. The island is 100 km long and the road network is uncomplicated, so even a first-time visitor can comfortably cover the whole island in two or three drives. Most resort hotels are on the eastern and southern coasts, well connected by the FV-1 dual carriageway.
Corralejo, in the north, has the most dramatic scenery: the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo stretches for 10 km along the coast, and the ferry to the tiny island of Lobos leaves from the town harbour. The Jandía Peninsula at the southern tip is the place for Fuerteventura's finest beaches — Playa de Sotavento, venue for the World Windsurf Championship, and the white sands of Playa de Morro Jable. The FV-2 road down to Jandía passes through the stark interior, and without a car, you'd reach none of it independently. A hire car from FUE airport is the most practical way to see the real Fuerteventura beyond the all-inclusives.
