Why hire a car near Venice

Venice's historic centre is built on water and connected by canals and footbridges — there are no roads, so no car, however small, can enter it. Getting around the lagoon itself means walking and vaporetto, full stop. A hire car in Venice is not for the city at all; it's for the Veneto region and the Dolomites that surround it, which is exactly why the practical pickup point is Mestre on the mainland or one of the two airports, not the lagoon itself.

Once you have a car, the region opens up fast. The Prosecco hills around Valdobbiadene are about an hour north, Verona and its Roman arena are under an hour and a half west, and the Dolomites — Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo — are roughly two and a half to three hours north, a realistic day trip if you leave early or an easy overnight base for a longer mountain stay. Padua, with its Scrovegni Chapel, is a quick 45-minute run west and pairs well with a Verona day.

What to know before you drive near Venice

  • Two airports serve Venice. Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is about 13 km from the mainland, reached via the People Mover or bus rather than directly by the lagoon; Treviso Airport (TSF) is about 40 km northwest and is the main base for low-cost carriers. Both have full car hire facilities. Compare Venice car hire prices →
  • You cannot drive into the historic centre — and shouldn't try. Venice's lagoon city is entirely pedestrian; the practical pickup and drop-off point is Mestre or the airport. Most visitors park there (or use the Tronchetto or Piazzale Roma car parks if driving in temporarily) and take the train or vaporetto into the lagoon itself.
  • ZTL zones apply on the mainland too. Mestre and Treviso both have limited traffic zones in their historic cores, monitored by cameras — check signage before entering to avoid a fine by post.
  • Tolls and mountain roads for the Dolomites. The A27 north toward Belluno and Cortina is mostly toll-free, but mountain roads are narrower and slower than they look on a map — budget extra time, especially in winter when snow chains may be required.
  • Continuing your trip? Verona is under 1.5 hours west via the A4, and from there it's another short hop to Milan and the lakes.

Where to collect your hire car near Venice

Marco Polo Airport (VCE), about 13 km from the mainland via the People Mover or bus, and Treviso Airport (TSF), about 40 km northwest, both have full car hire facilities. Most visitors collect at the airport or in Mestre, since the historic lagoon itself is car-free.

Frequently asked questions

Questions our customers actually ask before booking.

Can I drive into Venice's historic centre?
No. Venice's lagoon city has no roads — only canals and footbridges — so cars are physically unable to enter. A hire car is picked up at the airport or in Mestre on the mainland, and you reach the lagoon itself by train, bus or vaporetto.
Which airport should I collect my hire car from?
Marco Polo Airport (VCE), about 13 km from the mainland via the People Mover or bus, is the main hub. Treviso Airport (TSF), about 40 km northwest, is the base for most low-cost carriers and often has cheaper rental rates. Both have full car hire desks.
Do I need a car to visit Venice?
Not for the lagoon itself — walking and vaporetto cover it completely. A hire car becomes worthwhile once you want to see the Dolomites, the Prosecco hills, Verona or the wider Veneto countryside, none of which are convenient without your own transport.
How far are the Dolomites from Venice?
Around 2.5 to 3 hours north by car to reach Cortina d'Ampezzo, mostly via the A27 motorway toward Belluno and then mountain roads. It's doable as a long day trip but works better as an overnight stay if you want real time in the mountains.
Can I combine Venice with Verona and the lakes?
Yes — Verona is under 1.5 hours west of Venice via the A4, and from there Lake Garda and Milan are both within easy reach, making a Venice–Verona–Milan loop a popular week-long itinerary.
Which car hire companies operate near Venice?
Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget and Sixt all have desks at Marco Polo and Treviso, alongside Italian agencies that are often more flexible on one-way rentals toward the Dolomites or Verona. Compare all Venice car hire prices →
